Imagine a party where just those bands were playing-it'd be fookin sh1t

This line up kicks the arse off any major festival held in the last long while.

I've crossed out the ones I'm not mad about but would still draw an international crowd.

U2,
Enya,
Rory Gallagher,
Two Door Cinema Club,
Wolfetones,
Mick Flannery,
Thin Lizzy,
Christy Moore,
Snow Patrol,
The Dubliners,
Ash,
Mundy,
The Corrs,
Van Morrison,
The Cranberries.

That would be a cracking weekend.

The most unfortunate thing about the Irish music scene is that people champion bands just because they are Irish and completely ignore the fact that more times than not their sound is two years in the past or are ripping off the current fads, while the innovative bands get overlooked.

Both, curious about innovative bands who have been overlooked and who you think is two years behind.

Not from my experience, we are notorious for it and that is why we have not produced a mega act since U2, boy bands do not count.

There is no 'best'...it's a living thing beyond catagorization - that's the beauty of music...x

The Corrs were pretty big, Damien Rice was pretty huge for a while there (at least in terms of getting money for his songs being in films and television shows! :D). You're not going to get very many U2s from a country of 5 million or whatever it is. Mega acts in general have been becoming pretty hard to find in recent years too.

I'm notoriously out of touch with the Irish music scene so I can't really comment on the quality of whoever's about now though. RTE used to always give of a vibe of what you're on about but I assume the actual music scenes around the place are a bit more interesting?

The Script are world wide so too are BellX1. That's just off the top of my head.

I am fond of Delorentos.

Rip tide movement are one to watch.

No love for The Frames/Glen Hansard? (Oscars and all) ;)

Going to Tara Rocks, Riptide Movement playing as well as Hot House Flowers. Can't wait to see both but probably showing my age now.
Saw The Stunning there last year and they were pretty damn good as well.

Revelate is one of my most favourite songs of al time. I was responding to a poster who thinks Ireland hasn't produced some big acts in the last while.

Oh, and Ryan Sheridan is massive in Germany and other parts of Europe.

Luke Kelly probably.

I know the Cranberries have already got some stick in this thread but I'd rank them highly. Thin Lizzy and Van as well.

Big Shoegaze fan, but never took to MBV.

A tidal movement could rip a guy or gal while playing a grass reed but nobody notices...you're just here - play now not later x There's no competition. Just do your thing....Night

My Bloody Valentine

Yeah Kevin Shields is definitely one of the best. He's a wonderful composer and innovator.

Vocally Sinéad O'Connor is one of the best, it's a shame that her personal life has often overshadowed her talent.

U2 would have to be up there too; they're not always consistent and their best days are behind them (and yeah, Bono's a bit of a prat at times) but they have recorded some true gems over the years.

More recent Irish musicians I really like include Cathy Davey, Young Wonder and Sleep Thieves. :)

I'm going with The Pogues.

Poll not to follow. :)

Who is it for you?

Thats a list of popular, doesn't make them any good.

I think you'll find it does.

Art is subjective, all those artists are around a long while so are clearly "good" to their fan base.

Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher are widely regarded as some of the most talented rock musicians of all time, and you can say what you want about Bono, I wouldn't be too gone on U2 myself, but his songwriting talent is undeniable.

I'm shocked no one mentioned The Fureys.

http://youtu.be/z265BuKCQrc

In terms of musicians, Sharon Shannon, Seamie O Dowd, Rory Gallagher, Glen Hansard, Damian Rice, Ryan Sheridan, Donal Lunny, Barney McKenna, Luke Kelly, Stevie Appleby from Little Green Cars, Donal and Pierce from Túcan, Van Morrison and Terry Woods.

Anyone heading to the fleadh could do worse than heading to see Rackhouse Pilfer in 5th on teeling on thursday/friday or saturday night. Great bunch of lads.

I think people often can be quite judgemental about music, particularly when it comes to Irish acts. Like say for example when I say that my two favourite Irish acts are Bell x1 and Declan O'Rourke, I'm sure there are plenty of people who would dismiss both of those. But I like their music a lot, their lyrics appeal to me and they do brilliant live shows.

Sure, they might not be the greatest but they entertain me and many others more than the other acts do so they don't deserve to be dismissed. It's the same when people mention Glen Hansard. Both he and The Frames, as well as his many other ventures, not to mention his Oscar success is surely worth applauding- yet so many people don't want to give him any acknowledgement. I saw him perform with Bruce Springsteen in Kilkenny last summer and he was fantastic. And clearly absolutely loved being up there, as did Bruce performing with him.

There are enough Irish acts out there for us all to have our own "greatest" without putting down the ones we might not particularly like ourselves.
