Those are blackcurrants. Post a picture of the leaf of the bush for a definite, without a doubt, identification.

But they are blackcurrants. Without a doubt.

They're definitely blackcurrants MissF. I bought two red gooseberry bushes in Aldi a few weeks ago - I'm expecting to be making jam this time next year :)

Sillymoo - I think if I did poison myself I'd be way, way too embarrassed to have to tell a nice doctor I just ate things I found on a bush even though I didn't know what they were :D I'd have to pretend one fell into my mouth or something

Don't worry - doctor patient confidentiality is your friend! You could also use the line "my friend gave them to me and said they were not poison" etc etc.......

Anyways I'm sure they are harmless blackcurrants or something, post later today and let us know you're OK!

If we don't hear from you we'll have to try and track you down to make sure you're ok - looking for someone with fish shaped plates and a penchant for Mexican food shouldn't be too difficult right?!

    Jury's in....

    0.jpg

No trips to Beaumount clutching my stomach and rehearsing the story of how I fell in the garden and a passing bird dropped the berry straight down my gullet :) Now, to eat random mushrooms I find growing around the place and see if my luck holds....

(Definitely not going to do this)

(Look at the little modesty leaves on the ribena berries! mad! Actually, Animord, her leaf bikini is pretty much the leaves that are on the bush, go Ribena and their attention to detail.)

I went for a lovely lunch yesterday at a restaurant in the city centre in Montpellier called La Cocotte. We each had the "assiette du jour" which was really a four-course taster place, which changes every day.
Ours was a oriental chickpea amuse bouche, a mozzarella, tomato and pesto salad, a cheese and cherry tomato tart (you could choose that or lasagne) and a small piece of pear and chocolate cake.
It was delicious, very reasonably priced (11 euro) and relaxed.

I made this year's surplus blackcurrants (after Her Indoors made jam and energy bars) into melomel, a type of fruit-flavoured mead. It tasted out of this world before I started fermenting it, but it will be completely different (but hopefully still divine) by the time it's ready, probably sometime in early spring.

Regardless of exact berry, surely some jam is plan!

Kohlrabi - I made this a few weeks ago. Very, very nice. Lots of ingredients, but very easy.

Update on Lidl chunks of gran padano. I buzzed them (having sliced them in half, as full ones getting stuck) in my new Lidl food chopper thingie, as recommended by OscarBravo. I had to make a pasta salad for a family gathering tomorrow, so made the avoca one, and have quadrupled the parmesan content simply because of the fun I got whizzing them up.

    Pre and Post Whizz...

Fiddlechic, quick question if I can, what's the Lidl chopper like? Debating getting it but didn't want to bug another kitchen appliance that I won't use!

I'm very impressed with it for the price. It's easily cleaned, sharp and fast. Very good value - fair play if you can get it, I bought the last closed boxed one in my local Lidl on the afternoon of the 1st day they went on sale.

Went a bit mad buying cookware and appliances on debenhams website last night! Picked up a set of 2 tefal frying pans (20cm and 26cm) for 20e, a 28cm
Stir fry pan for 15e, mason cash roaster and ramekin set for 24e and kenwood 'smoothie to go' blender for 31e - this was after 10% discount for spending over 40e and because I had also spent over 30e I got free delivery - the total came to 91e - then I realised I had a debenhams gift card in my wallet and had no idea how much was on it - so stuck in the card number and lo and behold....40e on it! So I got the whole lot for 51e! Happy days!

Any suggestions for a good contribution to a pot luck dinner party? Savoury, as I'm no good with sweet things!

Roast/grilled chicken thighs would be on top of my list.
Lentil and nut loaf for the vegetarians.

My aunt gave me a few marrows from her greenhouse that are basically the size of a football!

    Any suggestions for recipes?
Stuffing it and baking it seems to be the way forward based on google - http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/chorizopepperandcous_75307

Mmmm, we used to get that as kids - it was stuffed with a savoury mince type thing and I loved it - not sure if I loved it because it was really good or because getting a 'boat' of mince for dinner seemed really exciting.

Also Marrow and Ginger jam was a great favourite of ours.

Right I'm on a bit of a budget drive, and looking to get away from boring basics like shepherds pie/lasagne/casseroles etc.

First off I'm going to try butter chicken :D

Anyone got a recipe for potata bravas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,859 ✭✭✭✭The Hill Billy

Patata bravas is covered in this Cooking club recipe.

There's a kind if spice shop I'm trying to venture to now once a week in naas. It's been here ages and i wasn't very frequent. The guy who owns it gradually rushed out to me more and more asking if I was ok or wanted help. I shyed away in the beginning, but now the man is deadly. Picked a bag of prawns out of no where for me, gives me spices that I cannot see. And throws in a couple of chillies when I'm on the way out. His garlic is fab, the fresh herbs too. Across from the primary cbs if a local comes by this!

I had similar in the shop in blackrock market (dublin). I usually can't stand sales assistants doing this in the likes of clothes shops, with their fake smiles etc. But this guy was genuinely interested in finding what I wanted, he also bought stuff in for me which they didn't have.

Found a tip online to prevent half an avocado from going black and slimy overnight - put it in a small bowl with a lump of cut onion then cover bowl tightly with clingfilm. Apparently the sulphur released from the onion prevents the oxygen affecting the avocado - worked perfectly!

Also if you cover the surface of guac with onion slices it should keep it going horrible too

Does anyone here have the Hi-Life Dining card? I was given one for free for the next three months, and really want to make the most of it while I have it! Does anyone know of any good restaurants that take it, preferably around Blanchardstown/Castleknock or anywhere in the city centre? Any type of food at all, I want to get more adventurous when eating out! :)

I had it a few years ago. Found it fairly rubbish to be honest. Lots of hidden conditions, lots of early week only deals.
You can find out the restaurants that take it on their website- http://www.hi-life.ie/Search.aspx

I just had a quick look to see what has changed - and they still have a lot of chains like Apache Pizza, Milanos, Pizza Hut. They also seem to have lots of ethnic restaurants as well. If you haven't been worth checking out Soulful Bistro in Stonybatter,

For anybody interested, I see Nisbets are offering free P&P in Ireland at the moment. Ideal if you want to buy something small. I remember looking at something a while ago and when you factored in the delivery it just wasn't worth it.

Got my delivery from Nisbets today. Delivered for free in less that 24 hours!

'tis indeed. They have a Global one on the site for over €30!!! Mad money!
The one I got seems like it'll do the job just fine. Nice and sturdy.

Another book added to the collection :D - 400 best every budget recipies. Got it in work from one of those companies that drops off books in reception.

It's actually very good with lots of good recipes / ideas.

Made vegetarian sausages for the kids and they wolfed them.

The book is also on Amazon below and I'd recommend it!
