Has anyone ever been to the dentist and been told they don't need something done? Ever?

By the way, for those of you who have any issues or complaints about dentists, there is the Dentist Council for that very purpose.

There is a sales technique known as the upsell. Its like going to a restaurant and at the end of the dinner they will politely say to you that they are sure that you will need some desert after all this food. Even the phrasing of this question is framed in a way to sound positive, (by the good restaurants) the others will just ask are you ok for desert, meaning you only have two choices....

Anyways back on track, irish dentists long ago learned this technique except it was through scare mongering.
I went to a dentist around 18-19 and I came out thinking there was everything wrong with my teeth, with all the scare stories yer man was saying, sooo I went away for a while and went to a dentist in another country and lo and behold, there was F'all wrong with them.
**** was just doing the upsell.

there's a dental forum here that i stumbled across when looking for reviews about polish dentists. The dentists there appear to hate any dentist that isn't Irish. You'd swear that if you go anywhere else they're all barbarians who operate in dingy back rooms.
The constant theme was that if you are going to pay anything less than the higher Irish amount, you were stupid and you were going to get substandard work because of the cost of equipment. Implants and fillings etc would be made with dodgy material and come from second rate manufacturers.

There was one great thread where someone pointed out that even at the highest cost an implant was less than a hundred quid so how come Irish dentists charge so much. It came down to insurance and equipment costs apparently. Then someone pointed out some polish dentists that had set up here and were doing work in Ireland for a fraction of the price so it couldn't be that.

The reason a lot of dentists charge so much compared to others is because they can and because there are idiots who will pay it.

I like to stare directly at them when they are doing their work; it really unnerves them.

Not a clever thing to do when they are drilling or chiselling your teeth...

Yeah, every checkup for the last 4 years

Yup, I'm the exact same. And no direct charge for the check up as PRSI.
