A couple of years ago I got my teeth done in Poland. I found an absolutely fabulous fabulous dentist. It cost me €3,600 total, including flights and hotels over about 4 visits. The quote here in Dublin was €12,800.
The most modern dental surgery and equipment.

Cos if they do it wrong the you die. Anesthetists are one of the highest paid medical specialists.

I know yeah, I understand the risks of it, but I just wish it was as openly available in dentistry as it was in normal medicine.

I dont know why general anasthetic is so expensive and why they're so reluctant to give it.
Because it's so bloody dangerous !
I really dont like dentists, and if I can knocked out for the procedure then I'll take it! They seem really irritated when you ask about it for some reason.
A little injection is too much for you ?

No, painful procedures like removing wisdom teeth and root canals are too painful for me.
Injections have gone wrong for me in the past too, bad experience with dentists all my life.
I have a big fear of them.

The reason the OP has only two fillings is that he doesn't go to the dentist.
I am sure there are toothless people everywhere who have had zero fillings.

absolutely ditto. I get you completely. I've had a life long dental challenge starting with a year in the dental hosp when I was 13.

Sometimes dentists are a lottery at giving injections too.

I started to get the nerves when going to one too. Then it all changed when I went to my polish guy. Painless injection. Total confidence. You won't believe me but I had so many laughs with him over the many months. Amazing.

if a root canal is too painful then you need to go a different dentist cos they are doing something wrong. They are no more painful than a regular filling.

My brother was told a dental implant would cost him 2000 euro. He was presented with a bill for 4300 euro.

Those tools use a heck of a lot of water...

    Looks like it..

Wait, hold the phone, if I am paying PRSI(it appears on my payslip at least, I have never set up any insurance or been to a doctor/hospital etc in over a decade) I can get a free dental checkup?

My mam had a dentist charge her €30 for each of the injections he gave her that didn't work, as well as for the one that did. :P Competence is an undervalued quality.

Regular fillings have been extruciating for me in the past.
As I said, terrible experiences with dentists or maybe I just have particularly sensitive teeth.

    that or low pain tolerance.

for me local anesthesia wears off really quickly... i had to have a growth in my lower jaw bone removed with a drill.. no pain relief whatsoever. i now understand the pain people who donate bonemarrow must go through

I like to stare directly at them when they are doing their work; it really unnerves them.
Yeah...like I really want the person drilling into my teeth not to have their mind on the job.

Correct. I had a root canal that took the guy 3.5 hours (!) I actually fell asleep twice and didn't feel a tickle.

I have very sensitive bottom front teeth and I always used to tell the dentist and reminded him to give me an extra one.

FYI a filling does more than hold the tooth together, it prevents decay on the soft inner part of the tooth!

Do not ignore holes or missing fillings!

Has anyone ever been to the dentist and been told they don't need something done? Ever?

By the way, for those of you who have any issues or complaints about dentists, there is the Dentist Council for that very purpose.

I had a root canal in January following a very painful Christmas with an abscess, 4 days after my root canal I was hit with kidney stones.. and I'm about to have my second root canal this year on a different tooth next week.

    I love this year :pac:

Haven't been to a dentist since about 2006. Never had a filling. Worst I had was a chipped canine which I got covered but it fell off after a month. Is this not normal?

I go to see a dental hygienist on the South Circular and no dentist has ever cleaned my teeth anywhere near as good as the hygienist does. Its €80 but your appointment is 30 minutes of just cleaning and your teeth are perfect at the end!

They find the filling along with your checkup for a reason ya know ;):) Otherwise go up north to get your dentistry or any cosmetic stuff done!

Got my teeth cleaned last week, not just your dental scale and polish clean either for a whole €25.
He had more gadgets than I've ever seen in a dental surgery.
