Palestinian authorities to file lawsuit against Israel in ICC:

"Palestinian authorities prepare a lawsuit to the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israel for committing “war crimes” in Gaza Strip that have already led to the death of nearly 1.3 thousand people, the majority of victims being civilians, al-Arabi al-Jadeed reported late Wednesday."

"According to the media, Palestinian Minister of Justice Saleem Al-Saqqa is currently working on the plea that he will later send to the ICC."

    http://en.ria.ru/world/20140731/191507666/Palestine-to-File-Lawsuit-Against-Israel-in-ICC---Reports.html

If the ICC refuse this request or refuse to attempt to prosecute Israel for it's repeated breaches of international law and warcrimes then it will call into question the integrity of that institution.

I think he addresses some of the understandable angst you feel and it might help you realize that by remaining a compassionate and empathetic human being you are doing something.

Thank you - I watched that already this week and it's very touching.

But the feeling of helplessness remains. This is not a situation that is hidden, it's on our websites and news coverage. We are aware of the killing. We know where it's happening.

And yet, I cannot stop it.

A UN military action would require a resolution of the security council. The USA has a veto on that council and will veto any attempt to resolve to intervene with force.

    1. The UN doesn't have an army

    2. The UN security council is dominated by 5 'permanent' members any of who can veto any action by the U.N. and all of whom have conflicting geo-political interests thereby rendering the U.N. utterly impotent in matters of contentious international affairs.
If this was Afghanistan or Iran doing this to a neighbouring state they would have had 50 b-52 over it the next day.

Israel should have all weapons taken off them and military ban like the Germans had in world war 1 and 2.
No, Israel need to be able to defend themselves, but they should face economic sanctions for the flagrant breaches in international law. Unfortunately, the U.N. is paralysed and will not impose sanctions on Israel, and the E.U. will not sanction Israel because 1. Germany will not publically criticise israel for historical reasons, and 2. The E.U. will not put the lives of Palestinian children above international relations with the U.S.

I feel really weak. There is a part of me that I do not want to acknowledge - that I am powerless to stop any more people being killed.

I will boycott any products I know are from Israel, but that won't stop today's assaults.

My sphere of influence is very limited, and most likely anybody who I can influence already agrees with me. That won't stop today's bombings.

I am one small person in a tiny country with no political or military or financial influence.

    I am a nobody.

And possibly right now - right this minute as I type - people are being murdered. And I can do nothing.

    That terrifies and depresses me.

Get out on the streets, go to the protests. You are not weak. If enough of us challenge our Government and put pressure on them we can force them to expel the ambassador. We can be the first in Europe to do so and that in itself will speak volumes. Maybe others will then follow. Be true to your values.

Protests are starting to become global. No point in us channelling all our outrage on Boards. People need to get out and make their voices heard. I'll be going again today after work outside the Dept of Foreign Affairs. Hopefully I'll see some of you there.

While it sounds good on paper, if Israel's defences were removed I think Israel would be overrun by some of its neighbours in short time.
That would be a big call to make and I can 't see anybody enforcing it. More likely Israel would fight whoever tried it and then there would be all sorts of issues in the region.

At the same time I am not surprised by what Israel is doing. I don't agree with it but Israel has "form" in this regard, this is how they deal with situations like this, whether the rest of us agree or not and perhaps there is another agenda, I don't know, but they are traditionally heavy handed to say the least.
Based in my time in Israel I feel that there is a deep rooted fear that everybody in the region wants them dead and they need to be the baddest dog in the neighbourhood.
They do not of course help themselves with their carry on such as settlements and the recent actions in gaza which leads to more people wanting them dead and the circle continues.
This will not end well or easily.

Excusing Israel because they have "form". Describing what they're doing as "carry on".

Keep fooling yourself as to the brutality and evil of it.

Who is Israel defending themselves against as they seem to bully all other nations in that region. The Palestine conflict has basically existed since Israel was created.

As for the UN I'm sure if the uproar is big enough changes can be made regardless of veto's, because this is a disgrace.

Hitler didn't stop and neither will Israel.

People in this country only protest when Garth Brooke's gigs are cancelled... You couldn't get them out when the country was going down the tubes, people are hardly going to protest for this

In fairness he didn't seek to justify it. He is relating his own knowledge of the area and his own reflections. That is commendable.

I dont see why the EU can't act outside of the UN

I get the feeling that if the Palestinian people were wiped off the map, the Israeli supports would say "well at least they got Hamas" just to justify it all.

But if their all that nice and friendly and civil then they should just let them walk in otherwise why bother discussing this because Israel sees nothing wrong with eliminating Muslims and I'm sure the American will fund that project forever.

Israel and the US have not ratified the relevant treaty, so it makes no odds.

There is a lot the EU can do outside the UN. For one we could remove preferential trade agreements with Israel to start with, remove Israel from taking part in joint scientific research if the organization or University operates in the occupied territories or does weapons research for the IDF, limit access to grants, and ban all products from settlements. The EU is one of Israel largest trading partners. On its own it could hurt the Israeli economy.

Now maybe the US would try and pick up the tab, but that would also cost them dearly.

First off the UN is an observatory force, there to help civilians. They can't take side. If they did the wouldn't be able to do their job. Countries wouldn't let them in.

Secondly if you think for one second that the situation in Gaza is the same as Nazi Germany you are way off the mark. These kind of comments are really disgusting.

Thirdly Israel has every right to exist. Where do you think the Jews came from? Do people think they were born in vacuum?

And lastly. America goes into country that harbours terrorist that have attacked America.

Israel supports America, they are allies. There is no reason for America to turn on Israel.

No, they couldn't just drop a couple of nuclear weapons on them tomorrow, and walk away. They would be a pariah a single second afterwards, they would lose complete US and EU support, and would be put under crippling sanctions.

Simply put they have to take things slowly, to avoid such a scenario.

Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on the planet.

They certainly don't need to drop nukes to make an absolute ****e of the place.

    They have shown restraint.
