Is there a way of doing that. The operator did it to mine when it was repaired. But I didn't think there was a way for the average joe to do that.

The Nokia Software Recovery Tool is available to anyone, it will restore the phone to the latest OS/firmware available (which is WP8.0 for most phones as of right now)

There is another piece of software called Lumia Software Updater Pro which can put any version on the phone, even betas - but it's for partners and service people only.

Maybe I'm a bit late to the Party, but Cortana is really starting to return local results for things like restaurants, shops, etc.

E.g. List the Chinese restaurants near home?
    Where is the nearest Tesco?
    Etc..

(Previously, my nearest restaurant was in Seville :D)

The restaurants don't necessarily have reviews or phone numbers, but they have directions and it's a start.

Anyone else feel Here Drive was actually better on 7.8/8 than now ?
On 8.1 I find it laggy, app freezes mid trip sometimes and needs to be restarted, phone gets very warm after a period of use etc.

Using it on a Lumia 925. On my Lumia 800 3 years ago the user experience was actually better IMO. Thoughts ?

Yes, I found that recently while on holidays. I got a phoneholder that clipped on to the air vent and had the aircon on so that kept it cool, but it did crash a few times.

Is it just me or do people find that swiping the notification center screen back up is very hit and miss ?

Think you need to swipe or grab the blue bar at the end more so than just swiping generally.

I have noticed that the "press, hold and drag" to move the cursor around within text (e.g. To move it back 3-4 characters to correct a typo) has been dreadful since 8.1 was released.

For the Here maps, I've not noticed crashes or sluggishness (Lumia 920), but the heat of the phone is crazy.

I have 8.1 on developer preview on a 625 on o2 but am still on lumia black, how do I get Cyan?

    TIA

You will need to wait for it to be released by Nokia for that handset in Ireland (and possibly by your Network, if your phone is not unlocked)

The status for Nokia Lumia Cyan in each of the regions is here: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/availability-in-europe/

I think you need to get back to 8.0 first. I don't think 8.1 Developer Preview -> 8.1 RTM is a supported upgrade path?

Yep.. because of the screw-up with Bitlocker encrypted Dev Preview phones when upgrading to 8.1 RTM, you need to downgrade to 8.0 first using the Nokia Recovery tools.

It's a bit of a pain but if you backup the phone first it should restore everything when the update has finished.

    (Yay! 10000 posts!) :D

    I can confirm this works.

I have a Lumia 1520 that was running 8.1 Dev Preview. I made sure the phone was backed up, then used the Nokia Software Recovery Tool to restore the phone to 8.0.

On connecting to wifi, the phone saw and updated to 8.1 Cyan. Lastly, reset the phone and as part of the setup process, sign into your MS account and restore the most recent back.

Note: make sure 8.1 Cyan is actually available on your phone model + network before doing this!!

    Congrats on the 10,000 posts!

MS are not at the moment releasing the Cyan update to those on the 8.1 DP but the word in the other forums is that they eventually will, pending a fix for the bitlocker issue. If you are currently using bitlocker encryption you might have to restore to 8.0 in the end, nobody knows yet. If you don't want to wait for MS to fix the update issue then you can restore and get Cyan that way.

My wife's 925 on O2 got the 8.1 and Cyan update yesterday, everything works very nicely. And now that there's an official fitbit app that allows syncing with their products there might be a nice early Christmas present on the way ;-)

does backup backup everything, apps, music, texts etc?

Apps yes, texts yes (check it's selected under Backup>Texts), Start screen yes

Music it wouldn't do I don't think (but then I don't have any on my phone anyway), but pics should be synced to OneDrive or stored on a MicroSD card (if you have one). Make sure you run a Backup before you start.

Wiped the phone last night and downgraded to 8.0 but it turns out the 1320 ISN'T getting Cyan just yet so I then re-updated using the Dev Preview, reset the phone (About>Reset), and when I signed back in and picked the backup it automatically reinstalled all the apps, texts and Start screen layout for me. Have done this successfully twice now:)

    Music definitely isn't backed up.

Apps are backed up (as in it knows which ones to install again after) but I'm not sure about app data like game progress etc.

It's best to check Settings > Backup to see what's backed up.

Music isn't backed up, but if it's on the memory card, it should be ok.

Also, apps aren't technically backed up, just re-downloaded from the store (if available) then their settings + data is restored.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,020 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Ah yea, that's an important distinction. If you have any apps installed that have been since pulled from the store for whatever reason you won't be able to install them again after restoring.

That's the way all the major platforms work with their cloud backup strategies - user settings + app settings (normally includes camera roll, but not the rest of the photos).

There are a few differences between 8.1 with and without Cyan.

    * SensorCore is enabled on supported devices (step counting, user location habits) under Settings > Motion data
    * The wifi symbol has an activity indicator
    * The lock screen should fade in when you press the sleep/wake button
    * Notify on slow charging, ask before using data connection on USB
    * Bluetooth LE support (finally!)

    - Don't have the first one. Not really an essential though IMO
    - Noticed this alright but it's a minor cosmetic adjustment really
    - Not on mine.. still pops in/out. I'd rather hae seen the ability to add more notifications to the lockscreen than the rather limiting 5 myself
    - Haven't noticed but again not a critical change IMO
    - Meh - although it did repair quicker to the car today so maybe that's an indirect benefit?

That probably sounds harsh, but I'm hoping the real changes are under the hood with drivers/firmware updates for the device, although it did get very hot at one point last night which seems to be a known issue :(

Feature-wise notifications still seem a bit off (but this might change as vendors update their apps now that 8.1 is more widespread?) and the lack of local apps is still a pain and the biggest issue. The rest they've pretty much brought up to par with the competition with 8.1. Battery life and consistent performance is still its biggest asset vs Androids I've had in the past.

Cortana I've no interest in myself but (as I said elsewhere) I'd love to see full integration with Windows desktop though (SMS, app updates/notifications etc that you can respond to directly from your Desktop or even the ability to make/take calls directly over your laptop/tablet speakers/mic/camera).

Is this not talking about the list of new features in Windows Phone 8.1 update 1 to phones with ordinary WP8.1 (with or without Cyan).

Windows Phone 8.1 Update (or Update 1, but that would be an ecumenical matter) goes into Dev Preview next week.

I understood from his post that he was talking about 8.1 vs 8.1 with Cyan?

You are right, the features are quite minor, and as MS finally starts to push out updates more often, the Nokia specific features become less noticeable.

There are a number of features in 8.1 that will require devs to update their apps, notifications are one of them. If the platform continues to get more popular, albeit slowly, more devs will appear which should result in better apps that are more frequently updated.

As for battery life, etc - the advice I always give is to go through all the Settings on the phone after a big update, turn off all the stuff you don't need (NFC, notifications, etc). Plus, in 8.1 you can use Battery Saver to see which apps are running the battery down.

No, all those features I listed are from my 1520 running 8.1 Cyan (compared against the 1020 which doesn't have Cyan).
