Best man Speech(Opinions Please)

    Hi all,

    I know another best man speech thread , Sorry. I'l get straight to the point.

    I am planning on putting in a funny line when thanking the priest for the service along the lines of "I'd like to thank Fr ******* for having the get away car ready thankfully it wasn't needed.

    Now the problem is the groom/bride and grooms parents are really really old fashioned and you cant say anything wrong about the church or make fun.

    I think its ok but my friends who know him think he'd be annoyed with it. My view is that it's tounge n cheek and should be ok given the context of the speech.

    Ideas?

    If were me I would change that to the name of one of the groomsmen or a family member that would take it in good humour. I would avoid offending the parents at any cost.

    I wouldn't try to be funny. Those forced one liners are always cringeworthy to listen to. Leave the line out as your speech is not the time to annoy any of the bridal party.

    Exactly!

    The groom is great, followed by the bride is great, followed by they'll be great together
    Any anecdotes should show the groom or bride in a good light.

    I wouldn't use it. Not because I think the parents will get offended (it would be a bit much if they do imo) but because as others have said - it's a cheesy one liner that sounds like it's been taken from one of the myriad of best man speech websites.

    As someone who has performed a best man speech in similar circumstances to you, just focus on the benign things about the groom rather than forced jokes. E.g. is he obsessed with a sport/team, maybe you lived with him and he only cleaned when his then girlfriend was calling over or doesn't know how to cook a square meal. Any of these if delivered tactfully will get a decent laugh without causing offence.
