Firstly this is probably more suited to After Hours than Music for,er,some reason.I dunno, maybe cos its more,er,general with potential to turn humourous.*shrugs*If Monty takes offence I ask that you please just move it rather than taking out the almighty banning sword.Cheers and no trouble or offence intended-idiots who post crap such as threads titled with only a full stop annoy the rest of us too you know:)

This thread was sparked by something which happened today.A friend of mine was in some text competition and a question asked was what was the name of Justin Timberlakes first album.Despite not being a fan of any of his releases I knew the anwser, but thinking that it would be interpreted as knowing a bit too much about a music category which I have raved against in the past I decided to pretend I hadnt a clue and let him ask a girl who gave him the right anwser.

So anyways this leads to my question-despite the fact you are a fan of what you term as more mature and more talented music what pop do you really like to hear even though you would never admit it out there in the scary, non boards world?I know a metalhead who relecutantly admitted he liked one of the S Club 7 songs(dont stop moving?Think thats the name of it).And I know a devout Jimi Hendrix/rock/indie fan who for some reason bought the Bob the Builder single he liked it so much.No matter who you are everybody seems to have something they shouldnt like among their favourites. And sure we all watched Your a Star, even though some(though not all)had sort of a pop slant.Never bothered with Pop Idol/Popstars myself but anyway.......

Personally for some reason I really like that Shakira song whenever wherever.Maybe it just grew on me watching that arse shaking video so many times.I also like that new R Kelly one for some reason. And seeing as Michael Jackson is pop,I`ll admit it(here anyway),I still quite like alot of his stuff.Unfortunately since that documentary there have been some great deals on his CDs but I have been frankly too embarrased to go up to the till and buy one of them.Ive seen them go for under a tenner but just cant bring myself to be potentially seen buying one,to get a funny look from the cashier or for anybody to find it hanging around my stereo:( God dammit i really want to get them!Pop artist or not he was and is an amazing talent, despite being,er,mad. And I really like that Avril Lavingne song Im With You for some reason.

And I plead guilty to dancing and singing to Westlifes Uptown Girl when pissed or just feeling a bit stupid,as you do.But seeing as it is yet another Louis Walsh stolen cover perhaps I could get away with some credibility by saying its not a westlife original, and so I will get to heaven despite my crime.
Sure hey,Homer Simpson liked that song so there:DAlthough then again he also liked Its Raining Men:eek:
Confess now or be cast to hell.......

And if any smart arse comes in saying"Anything that gets to the top 20 is technically pop and that includes any top selling rapper/metal band"they will be repeatedly arse raped with a shovel by the other posters. We are talking about stuff that in general is aimed at the young kids, yer mas or other groups which you dont fall into the target market of.
Sorry for the long winded post-I tend to do it when I have something downloading on kazaa and looking up sites would only slow it.

Since the age of 12 I've been a huge Duran Duran fan. To such an extent I have travelled to the Uk to see them in concert. I do not care to discuss how much I have spent on rareaties (but it's worth quiet a few quid)

I also like *ahem* Matallica/soundgarden/Manic street preachers/radiohead and other *normal* music.

Me thinks there maybe a spadau ballett fan who frequents boards as well...

I also admit to liking I'm with you from Avril Lavine.......it just has that certain something which is lacking in the charts these days.

rhianna - oh baby & junior senior - move your feet are the only 2 'pop' songs i've bothered downloading over the last couple of years.
most of the time i hear a song on the radio/mtv a few times & get sick of it.

    Mickey Jo is number 1,
I actually liked westlifes last song as well, the one that sounds like bryan adams,

My favourite stuff though would be Coldplay, Stereophonics, David Gray, and JJ72.

I find I have a very broad reaching and balanced taste in music, so some of it does involve pop :/

Of course it does. Anyone who truly likes and enjoys music shouldnt be shackled by what they should like and just enjoy what they actually like.

The whole pop industry is in an interesting state of flux at the moment as record companys are making the astonishing discovery that GOOD SONGS sell records better than good image and **** songs. Examples include The Sugababes (hey, im older than most of you and i think theyre great), Kylie and Robbie Williams.

Look at the pop rivals bands. Both should have had limitless marketing potential generated by the show, but it was Girls Aloud who got to number 1. Why? Personally i think it was because the single actually wasnt a total peice of toss, which the Boys band single was.

Also suprising was the amount of people saying that Travis's version of Hit Me Baby was a great version. Of course it was, Its a well written pop tune, Overproduced and lost in the marketing of the Brittany image but a good tune nonetheless.

Basically, a good song is a good song is a good song, whether its Slayer or Pink, Travis Tritt or The Gypsy Kings.

    Eurythmics own my bones.

I like that song 'Scandalous' (I think it's called) by Liberty X or Sugababes or someone, although a breakbeat remix of it would be splendid.

I basically like most types of music except hard metal and the likes because I never really got into, but Id still listen to a song if I was told it was really good.
Lately Im into 80's music and I also have a penchant for motown at times.
But I cant help tapping my feet to good old JT lately.

Like Sangre I've been listening to 80's songs lately, but that's because I was reading the thread about it and some of the songs mentioned just stirred something in my mind. Like that Neverending Story song.
As for pop at the moment, well I like Busted's new song, quite catchy.

Oh and Gopher, stop being such a girl. The Michael Jackson cds going cheap are Off The Wall and Thriller. Classics, so go buy them.

Yeah, its actually much more pathetic not buying something because of looks from the cashier then liking the music....

Also if you really have to, say its a b-day present

I also agree with Dustaz, a good song is a good song - "Can't get you out of my head" and Timberlake's new one is good. However, I do think most pop artists are Satans spawn and should be devoured by the overlord himself.

I just prefer and have more faith "real" artists who write and compose their own material. That said, I'm a huge fan of the biggest pop artist ever - Elvis. I think he only co-wrote one tune ever, out of a massive collection of tunes - they were all covers, or written specifically for him. I think his voice overshadows the fact that he was basically pop.

If you like a song, you like it. You shouldn't be afraid to admit that!

I have very broad taste in music, my cd collection boasts artists from Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Gary Moore etc. to Aretha Franklin and Norah Jones. My favourite genre is rock/metal so that takes up the bulk of my collection but I do find Christina Aguilara actually does have some pretty good music, strange really she's often compared to Britney but I can't stand Britney's squeeky nasal voice hmmmm...

A friend of mine is the best ever, he gives me a lift to work every day and one day he's playing Metallica and the next it's Westlife or Enrique :D He'll openly admit it to anyone and fair fcuks to him too!!

I know you qualified that remark with the elvis example, but that statement always annoys me. It could be infered from that that Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole are inferior to Wham. Or that Aretha Franklin or the Supremes were inferior to The Spice Girls (who puzzlingly seem to get writing credits).

Look at it this way, Noone would argue that Jimi Hendrix was the worlds greatest songwriter, but he could play a note or two. His best work tended to come from arrangements of blues standards.

Let songwriters write and performers perform. If they happen to be the same people, then well and good but its not any guarantee of quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,522 ✭✭✭Dr. Loon

I probably shuold have cleared the statement up Dustaz. Performers, i.e - Elvis, Sinatra etc. are all great, as are the writer/performers. What I really hate in the world of music today is manufactured bands... they aren't what music's about for me.

Sure, all these shows do find some talent, but the majority don't. It's only when a good writer writes a good song for a good performer that we see real music in place. That's why Elvis and Sinatra were so good. The writers were brilliant, but Elvis and Sinatra both turned down hundreds of songs in their time. Whil idiots like S Club 7 et al will take anything they can get I imagine.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I feel about music today. So this "real" music in my sense of the word doesn't stand a chance.
