Temporary plates for importing a car to Ireland from Switzerland

Hi,

In Switzerland, you are issued a number plate when you tax a car (annual tax, not VRT). So essentially when you buy a car second hand from somebody, it has no number plates or if you take it off the road you return the number plate. I want to import a car to Ireland without taxing the car in Switzerland (waste of money since I won't drive it here). Can one pay Irish VRT and have plates issued prior to importing one's car or are temporary plates issued (rather like dealer plates). This is a private car for personal use only.

You import the car and bring it to the NCT center within 7 days for an inspection, then, you are given the numberplate number once you pay VRT charge.

Does Switzerland have export plates as Germany has? I'd be surprised if they didn't.

Japanese cars that are imported usually don't have number plates, as the numberplate belongs to the owner rather than the car.

The difference being that I suspect the OP intends to import it personally by driving it over. Plates will be needed.

Ha, I just found out that Switzerland issues a 'plaque d immatriculation export' or a temporary export number plate. You don't have to return the plate after use. So exporting is easy and I can get the Irish plates once I get there. Thanks for all your help.
