I thought the Israelis didn't like sailing anyway as they blockade ports frequently and attack flotillas.

I'm making an educated guess, that they haven't been there, like myself. I think we should have our views and not be getting involved in diplomatic incidents like this.

    ........

So (a) your not having been there is still good enough to criticise them for their views, but their not having been there is not good enough to hold those views and (b) we should keep our gobs shut.

Apartheid South Africa would have lasted much longer if people took that attitude.

It shouldn't be flown while the occupation is on-going.

And it certainly shouldnt have been flying just days after the slaughter of those children on a beach.

Should we take down the Russian flag as well?

    How about the Saudi flag?

    American flag?
    in my opinion, yes

Taking down a flag at a children's sailing event is not the most constructive way to go about bringing peace to the region.

I think it's selective and too easy to do given how easily it fits into the accepted narrative that we have about the situation there.
nobody said taking down flags would solve the conflict, thats just untrue nonsense, however it is a way of getting out the message that people are discusted by israels crimes against humanity

What drove Hamas to take on Israel?
    ...
Hamas' own ceasefire proposal is too far-reaching for Israel to accept.

But, though bold, the demands focus largely on ending Gaza's blockade, from opening border crossings and an air- and seaport under international supervision, to the reestablishment of industrial zones and the (re)expansion of the marine fishing zone to 10km (6 miles).

    ...
One of the Palestinians' most respected polling centres, the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, found in June that 32% would vote for Hamas in legislative elections, while over 40% supported Ismail Haniya for president.

More broadly, a majority believed that "Hamas' way" to end the occupation was better than "Fatah's way".

While we do not know what levels of popular support Hamas has for continuing its fight, anecdotally, people seem to be resigned to more suffering because the status quo has become intolerable.

    Yep. Your point?
When people have no hope of a better tomorrow they might feel they have little to loose.

Returning to the status quo of a slow "death by a thousand cuts" as living standards are eroded may not be a option.

It's like Northern Ireland in that government jobs are about the main mechanism to keep people from being unemployed.

GDP per capita in the Gaza Strip is only $876 , in Israel it's $35,833
    Rebuilding isn't cheap

Imagine if we created one large halting site and locked all the travellers there 29,573 people , putting Bray or Navan on Lambay Island and left them to survive on €17 a week.

And then wonder why they get upset and the leaders can't control the hotheads , or how people could become leaders without challenging the powers.

Lets say the Israelis managed to wipe out Hamas.

Palestine would still be as bad as it is now and the country wouldnt be able to function properly because of Israel.

Why isnt there scantions placed on Israel the Americans are quick to punish the Russians over Ukraine.

If they wipe out Hamas another such group will fill the vacuum. This will keep happening so long as the Palestinians get such a raw deal.

I'm not criticising them for their views, I'm criticising the actions they have taken which I think are ill-thought through and their outrage which is very selective.

I'm not saying we should keep our gobs shut, I'm saying if we're going to get involved in diplomatically sensitive things like taking down flags then we should be consistent. We never took down UK or US flags over the Iraq invasion after all, funny how that works.

I just have to ask something. Apparently the ground operation (not invasion!) is to find and destroy the tunnels from Gaza into Israel. How successful have Hamas been in the last week in using those tunnels. I mean one would have to assume that they've been making massive use of them recently for Israel to justify the current course of action.

No, one would have to assume that without action by Israel they would have made massive use of them.
