It's a quiet enough weekend, as always Sky Arts and Heyday are worth checking out for alternative musicalicious programming

    http://www.sky.com/tv/channel/skyarts/listings#programme-0

    http://www.heyday.tv/schedule

    Friday on BBC4

    8.30pm Sounds of the Eighties
Showcasing a selection of musical performances from the BBC archives, featuring the Teardrop Explodes, Orange Juice, Robert Wyatt, Aztec Camera, Billy Bragg, the Fall, Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, the Pogues and the Style Council

9pm & 12.50am New! New! New! The Joy of The Guitar Riff
The guitar riff is the DNA of rock 'n' roll, a double helix of repetitive simplicity and fiendish complexity on which its history has been built. From Chuck Berry through to the White Stripes, this documentary traces the ebb and flow of the guitar riff over the last 60 years of popular music. With riffs and stories from an all-star cast including Brian May, Dave Davies, Hank Marvin, Joan Jett, Nile Rodgers, Tony Iommi, Robert Fripp, Johnny Marr, Nancy Wilson, Kevin Shields, Ryan Jarman, Tom Morello and many more. Narrated by Lauren Laverne.

10pm & 1.50am Great Guitar Riffs at the BBC
A compilation of clips and performances featuring some of the best guitar stars of all time, including Jimi Hendrix, the Kinks, Cream, AD/DC, the Smiths, Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, the Foo Fighters, the Pixies and the Stone Roses

    11pm Sound City
Documentary directed by Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl, celebrating Sound City, a Los Angeles recording studio where classic albums including Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Nirvana's Nevermind were produced. Following the facility's closure, Grohl gathers many of the artists who worked there to record a new album using Sound City's distinctive analogue equipment

2.50am More Guitar Heroes at the BBC
Archive performances by celebrated musicians Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Peter Green and Johnny Winter. Other artists featured include Manitas de Plata, Ry Cooder, Thin Lizzy and AC/DC, while Fleetwood Mac's Albatross and In the City by the Jam are among the classic songs seen again in clips from the BBC's 1970s music shows

    Friday BBC2 - 11.05pm T in The Park 2014
Greg James and Jen Long present highlights of last weekend's festival held in Balado, Kinross-shire, featuring tracks by main stage headliners Biffy Clyro, Calvin Harris and Arctic Monkeys, as well as performances by Paolo Nutini and Pharrell Williams among many others

Saturday BBC1 - 8.30pm Live From Edinburgh Castle
head of Wednesday's opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Alex Jones presents this star-studded concert in front of one of Scotland's most famous landmarks. Edinburgh Castle is the backdrop as a wide range of musical acts perform on stage, including soul legend Smokey Robinson, indie rockers Kaiser Chiefs, 1980s survivors Culture Club, torch singer Paloma Faith, pop-rock band OneRepublic, rap duo Rizzle Kicks and 2012 X Factor finalist Ella Henderson. For those who prefer something a little more classical, the line-up also includes operatic quartet Il Divo, mezzo Katherine Jenkins, West End star Alfie Boe and South African opera singer Pumeza. The music will be interspersed with comedy, courtesy of Bill Bailey and Fred MacAulay, and also features the final leg of the Queen's Baton Relay before it arrives in Glasgow tomorrow

Saturday BBC4 10.45pm - Nat King Cole: Afraid of The Dark
A look into the private journals of the music legend, who overcame a period of racial segregation and prejudice in America to become one of the greatest jazz icons of all time. He was the only major black television star in Hollywood during his heyday - but, behind closed doors, those around him were thinking of a way to package him as a quasi white. A candid account of what really happened in and around his `fairytale' life is taken from his own written thoughts, interviews with his widow, Maria, and contributions from other family members and fellow musicians

That's more or less it, The Monty Python pension fund concert is on GOLD on Sunday at 7.3pm where you might hear this ...

And before that, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure is on ITV on Saturday at 3.15pm.

    Be Excellent to each other!

I know Heart got a lot of stick for their ozone layer hole "big hair" Alone era output but they produced some fine work and in Nancy Wilson had shirley the most gorgeous string strummer in rock music (Ann was also very hot back then!).

Must have been so humiliating for Ann during the 'big hair' period, with the music video producers trying to make her look as thin as possible just to fit the MTV image

    New next Friday night 9.30pm

Northern Soul: Living for the Weekend

The northern soul phenomenon was the most exciting underground British club movement of the 1970s. At its highpoint, thousands of disenchanted white working class youths across the north of England danced to obscure, mid-60s Motown-inspired sounds until the sun rose. A dynamic culture of fashions, dance moves, vinyl obsession and much more grew up around this - all fuelled by the love of rare black American soul music with an express-train beat.
