I noticed a heifer today had a swollen tit and the flies were at it so I put her in and put alamicen spray on it and Stockton tar on it...now its not massive but slightly swollen will it need to be tubed or will it go away itself she is about a year or more old

One for the cow men on here, which I am not.hopefully they'll come along and correct me.
Was always told to try and strip out any infection,is the most important part.
the smell of which would attract flys. So I would keep up the fly control. And maybe a long lasting antibiotic or anti inflammatory.?

If you can at all strip out the tit and put tubes in her , and we got alamycin injection from the vet for two cows that got mastitis lately . 25cc for 4 days .
    Its cat weather for mastitis

Sounds like Summer Mastitis, or Dry Cow Mastitis. On occasion it can be rapidly fatal, hours. Often they get quite sick. Sometimes it's more chronic.

If the strippings are foul-smelling then the quarter is gone forever. Regular stripping is advised, burn/bury the fluid as it's highly infectious.

Prevention is by fly-repellant of the entire group, where possible move away from wooded areas or streams where there may be more flies, and put Stockholm tar on the teats of all dry cows/heifers twice a week.

Do you think Butox is a good product?

Butox. No particular opinion to be honest.
I think deltamethrin was what was recommended in the UK when they had Bluetongue as being the most effective.
That would be the active ingredient rather than a product name.

I used Butox during the week , I dont know if its good or bad but I noticed a few days later it still had the trail of it on their backs . Would this be normal ? I never noticed a pour on staying on the hair like that before

Butox is blue Isn't it? We did cattle with it last year and they stayed blue for about a few weeks!

No, it's white. Closamectin pour on is blue, is that what you're thinking of?

Yes, I know Closamectin is blue, we used that last year on cows, noromectin on calves. I'll have to think on that one, I know last year we used something for flies and lice and it left a mark on them for weeks. Levicide perhaps?

I know there was Butox used this year on heifers to stop ticks.

This stuff was white , it didnt run off or stain , it stayed in the exact same trail as it was poured . I thought it was strange but maybe its normal

Ohhhhhh I think I remember it now, it left a powdery trail?

Can't for the life remember the one that left a mark, although I think their backs had been damp when we put it on so that may have caused it to adhere to the hair.

Garlic spray I'd guess, still used with horses.

I've heard of garlic licks, when the cows sweat it smells of garlic and deters flies. Have no idea of they work or not.
