Well, here's a news story that was just made for AH.

Do not click on it if you are offended by Ulster rugby players blacking up as Ethiopians for amusement purposes.

As bad as those German fans at the World Cup.

It's different on the continent though where there isnt so much american influence, the Dutch still have Zwarte Piet and for them there is no association with racism.

Pretty f*cking racist to be fair. But at the end of the day racism isn't confined to the North of Ireland either like.

Paddy Wallace should list White Chicks as his favourite film. Let's see Ulster Rugby apologise for that.

Yes, I know, White Chicks in itself is always worthy of an apology regardless.

Paddy Jackson is a ginger. A ginger black man is kinda ironic, not funny maybe, but ironic all the same.

'Lets dress up as the Ethiopian running team'. That's a bit of an odd choice, but each to their own

'and one of us will be chained up like a slave' - that's where the thought process involved eludes me.

Young men being stupid - and wrong.

The real question is whether they have learned anything from the reaction to the picture, and if they now can be relied on to behave more responsibly.

Surely they should have dressed up as Saudi Arabian women at the Olympics, it would have made a valid point.

Or have pretended to be Americans at the Moscow Olympics in 1980, at least then there would be no photos...

What they did was at the very least stupid.

I have a feeling I'm going to get shouted at, but could someone please explain to me how, dressing up and putting make up on is racist? If a man dressed up as Marilyn Monroe and wore false boobs, would that be sexist?

My understanding of racism is that it is a belief that you are superior to someone else due to skin colour.

I wouldn't consider it racist, more so offensive to certain people. But in the words of Stephen Fry:

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so f*cking what."

I used to love Stephen Fry but he has become an insufferable arrogant prick in recent years - that quote being a good summing-up of same.
One of the most dishonest statements ever. In order not to look like a hypocrite so, he should ensure not to be offended by anything ever again. Except he will be. Because he is gay. And offensive things are often said about gay people. What he means by that quote is that people being offended annoys him only when it's over stuff that *he* personally doesn't find offensive.
There are people who look for offence no doubt, but offence can also be involuntary - in the case of anyone.

Intent I guess. Generally speaking I don't think people who blackface are all racists. But this particular case doesn't look like it has any intent other than to be controversial (the preserve of people lacking wit) and the slavery reference is pretty belittling.

Plenty of Irish slaves down the years too, wouldn't give a toss if some black rugby player threw on a red wig and fake set of chains so I don't see why anyone would be offended by this carry on now. Dismiss it as stupid all you want but spare everyone you're outrage.

    'faux' can also mean insincere.

Though you seem to have read the minds of these rugby players in order to establish the racist intent of their actions.

A more equivocal act, from an Irish point of view, would be players in the English Rugby team mocking Irish people about the famine. That would be offensive.
so I don't see why anyone would be offended by this carry on now.

There are people they'll be playing against next season in England, Wales, Scotland and France whose not too far removed ancestors would have been slaves who created vast wealth on the backs of their forced labour on threat of torture and murder.

    Racists? I'm not sure.

    Profoundly stupid? Certainly.
