Buying UK registered car

Hi everybody! I have a few questions that need answering.

I'm looking at a 2001 Toyota Yaris. Everything is fine, apart from the UK plates. I'm familiar with the normal change of ownership, but what do I do when its UK registered?

First of all, the car is in Dublin, not Northern Ireland. The seller has mentioned the logbook/V5C is in Northern Ireland, not on his person, which is strange. He said I would have to pay €50 to retrieve it.

What do you suggest I do, because this is very strange to me that he does not have the logbook?

I will be meeting him on Monday, to inspect the car and ask further questions. Thanks and any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds dodgy. Personally I'd be walking away from it.

I've bought a good few UK and NI cars over the years and have never heard of this 50 quid to get the taxbook crack. Without that V5, you cannot Vrt the car. Actually come to think of it, the car could be a cat c write off and the 50 quid is for the inspection that's carried out before they give you the logbook. In which case don't walk away...RUN as fast as you can.

There's plenty of 01 Yaris's on donedeal on Irishplates for handy money. Plus your probablygonna end up with a car that's tested and taxed. Take my advice and buy an Irish car and save yourself all the hassle.

Sound for the advice. Definitely not worth the risk, after reading that.

No registration documents then no sale. You will need this to register the car here and pay the VRT. Some cheek too telling you it will cost you another €50 to get it. Actually unless the seller is a dealer he/she should not be selling a car here on foreign plates.

For a 2001 Yaris, the hassle involved in importing,Vrting,Testing and Taxing the car would really make it impractical to be honest. As I said earlier, there are plenty available online already taxed and tested. If the car was a 2010 car then there probably would be some nice savings to be made but for a 2001, its not worth the hassle to be honest.

Heres a link to the VOSA identity check information ( This is the test they carry out to check a cat B&C write-off to make sure its not another car cloned to the original written off car ) The price is £41 which would be about €50.
