WC, 5-3-2. Which I discovered is not his only formation. Lol. He finds ways to win that is it.

I think there us a difference between what you consider a number 10 and some of the other posters . lampard would have been more involved in midfield than what some consider 10s normally would. Lamps was very effective at operating between the line but it seems many consider 10s to be pretty free in the defensive department nearly operating as shadow strikers with good passing range. Gerrard in that role excelled but I think lamps was more suited to an advanced midfielder role. The locations are the same but the role is different.

I don't think the role Gerrard played in 08/09 could be compared to Mata in his first season at Chelsea for example

You are both blurring together style of player with position I think. Crouch and Robbie Keane are both centre forwards, they just have different styles for how they go about it.

Lampard and Gerrard were not involved more in the midfield when they played 10. They didn't defend any deeper, nor drop any deeper when in possession. They both got in the box just as much as the more skilful type of 10s.

Shadow striker, 10, ACM, attacking midfielder - they're all just different names for the same position. They describe the player who plays in front of the CMs and behind the CF. They sniff around the box for goals, but also drop deep at times to get on the ball. Different players with different skills might approach the job in their own ways (preferring to dribble vs first time passing for example), but the tactical requirements of creating, feeding the wingers and CF, supporting the CF, scoring goals and defending in front of the midfield four are the same for everybody who plays the position.

If yis want to quibble about me saying that Lampard and Gerrard played as number 10s, then just change it for "the player behind the CF". Gerrard and Lampard's control was good enough when they played as "the player behind the CF", and they were very good in that position. Rooney's control is far superior to both of them so he is not lacking when he's played as the "the player behind the CF". You see? It makes no difference to the statement.

I thought he was muck last night, gave the ball away every time he got it and was in danger of being sent off.

He's been great in the tournament up til last night but Brazil roughed him up and he lost it.

Thought he player very well in that minefield that was Brazil's midfield. Bet his man with ease on a number of occasions and showed some nice skill on the ball. Granted having your ankles snapped for 90mins will take it's toll on any players performance.

you're right re positions vs style (which i acknowledged in my last post tbf)

but the requirement for touch is informed by how they play the position too, try play it differently and you'll need more of this and less of that.

I didn't think Cuardado had a good game at all last night. He was a lot better and caught the eye in earlier games but was wasteful last night - reminded me a bit of N*ni on a bad day.
