Sure why would he want some silly old bint that he could buy out 10 times over, from a country that has nothing to do with him, to tell him he can now call himself 'Sir'?

He could have bought his own planet and call himself the Overloard.

Or bought a title from one of the dozens of families who have the ability to confer them legally in Europe and sell them for the right price.

Well now I have a new goal in life.

I wouldn't accept any of those types of awards knighthoods, government awards, honorary degrees , freedom of the city etc.

They're all a load of bollocks organised to enhance the popularity of the institution giving the award.

I dislike Betty and what she represents.

And she's A queen, not the queen.
    +1, well said that man

So would you refuse any reward of honor from any head of state or just the British?

The idea of a method of rewarding civilians for acts of particular public good isn't inequal though. The US awards medals to civilians and so on.

It's only a knighthood because she's still the head of state, and it as a result makes you a knight of the Order of the British Empire.

Wouldn't accept it myself on point of principle (I would have an objection to swearing allegiance to the UK) but people like Bono have accepted them and not used the title.

Why not? Always nice to have a society offer you their highest award. Would you refuse a trip to Paris to pick up the Légion d'honneur?

No, because France is no longer a monarchy.

This can not be emphasised enough.

The amount "the queen" posts in AH is strange but I suppose it comes from being next door and all..

That said, yes I'd take a knighthood from the British Queen, and throw in some other stuff from other heads of state, some MVP from NBA and some trophies and more. I have an empty wall here I could use for all the glitter and glam.

Don't need it, already legally a Lord from when I bought £30 of land in the Scottish highlands. Also legally a pastor that can legally marry couples in 12 US states.

    I get bored sometimes.

Lord Pastor RoboRat, does your legal status as a pastor make you a member of the clergy? If that is the case, then you should note the following when considering your decision, as it might make a difference:
By tradition, clergy receiving a knighthood are not dubbed, as the use of a sword is thought inappropriate for their calling. They are not able to use the title 'Sir'.

No, so I am free to sheath my sword.

Sure why not ? Whether or not you agree with the system of monarchy its how things are in Britain and its not like they are all oppressed under the iron rule of an evil queen. Accepting an honorary knighthood would be simply accepting an honour that they want to bestow on you to recognise your contribution to whatever it is you've contributed to.

Nope. I'd do a Ronan o Gara(keep my hands in my pockets.)! Honorary doctorates given out by colleges are another crock of cac. Nothing more than a backslapping exercise.

At most you changed your name from Mr. RoboRat to Mr Lord RoboRat. Those Scottish titles are a load of ****.

I can marry people in some state too! Those are real as far as I know.

I don't believe in titles and all that BS, it belongs in the past, but my principles go out the window if there's free food. I'd imagine any feed up at Liz's house is going to be pretty good. Not sure I could promise any educated use of cutlery though.

I'm from the UK, so sure, I'll take a Knighthood. The OP talks about Steve Jobs being offered one: that would have been an Honorary Knighthood, since Jobs was not a UK citizen.

Trivia: John Cleese turned down a Life Peerage: he would have been Lord Cleese, with a seat in the House of Lords. His reason: he didn't want to spend winters in England.

Government resting upon the will and universal suffrage of the people has no anchorage except in the people's intelligence.

    That's just being unnecessarily pedantic.
You clearly understood who the OP was referring to. She's not our queen, she has no control over us or anything to do with us, but she is geographically the closest queen to us and the one we are most familiar with. If I refer to THE moon, you think of that thing we see in the sky at night time, you're not scanning through all the various moons of Jupiter, Saturn and Mars in your head.

I'd take it. Just once, I'd like for someone to call me "sir" without adding "you're making a scene".

It's not that he doesn't use the title, he can't unless he is a British citizen or a citizen of a commonwealth realm.

I love these threads though, so many self righteous yet completely wrong opinions.

Did you know that fewer than 500 people own half the land in Scotland...

Steve Jobs did not decline a knighthood. He was never offered one.
