remove Open JDK and install Oracle JDK

I'm hoping to do some development on Linux Mint, but it needs the Oracle JDK, Open JDK is installed by default.

/usr/bin/java is a symlink to /etc/alternatives/java, which in turn is a symlink to /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java.

So I'm wondering if it is as simple as removing the /usr/bin/java symlink and pointing it to my new Oracle 8 JDK install?

That should do the trick for the basics, but there is a thing about "alternatives" and I'm not sure how that will affect other programs (like a browser for example). How did you install the Oracle JDK?

Can't you put it into /usr/local/java and point to it (from your scripts/programs i mean and not change the link)
I would leave the system installed Java alone, we always get developers to use a different java/perl than the system installed ones, then when you do a update no surprises and stuff stops working .

Mint is based on Ubuntu so I'm guessing the following applies equally
update-java-alternatives

I just downloaded Netbeans with the Java 8 SDK, so I put it in my /home directory temporarily.

I played with that for a while, but that command appears to be for switching between versions, as opposed to installing a new version.

Yeah, it is. I thought you said you had installed the oracle jdk and you wanted to change the sym-link... the update-alternatives is the easiest way ensuring all is changed correctly.

I had it downloaded and untarred into a directory. Maybe that's not quite "installed".

I think (not 100% but pretty sure) there is a package to install with apt-get... I had just assumed you'd used it. But whatever works

Distributions had to take it out when Oracle took over Sun, they aren't allowed to redistribute Oracle's JDK themselves anymore:

Webupd8 have a PPA for Ubuntu and there are plenty of guides out there for CentOS. After that, you'll have to Google for what you need.

I installed it last night to get Minecraft working on this laptop for my son.

Yeah, this is a bit basic, but it replaces all of the defaults & updates apt and worked.
