FEA Job Advert - Will they find it hard to fill

Was just looking at a job advert by Medtronic in Galway and was wondering how hard will they find it to fill, or will they find it hard at all?

Some of the key points are:

1) Post-graduate qualification (PhD preferred) in the application of FEA necessary
2) Experience in the commercial use of ABAQUS essential
3) Ideally 3+ years experience of performing FEA in an industrial application
4) Experience in the following areas highly desirable:- fatigue analysis; superelastic material behaviour; probabilistic modelling; virtual DOE techniques; finite deformation theory

Would there be many people in Ireland with this skill set do you think?

To me it looks like they'll find it pretty hard as they've limited themselves to PhD's who had a mainly FEA based Thesis and who also have industrial experience in FEA.

Not really, I don't have a PhD but could tick allot of those boxes and know allot of people who could. Maybe its just who I knocked about with at college in DCU.

Fair enough, I just thought finding someone with ABAQUS, industrial experience and a PhD would be tough going.

Not really. Most PhD's with FEA go to industry. Abaqus is used quite a bit, although Ansys seems to prevail. There is a pretty good network of FEA practitioners in Ireland. I am stateside and (at least where I am based) it seems to be a bit thinner on the ground. Is there a reason you are asking?

Lol yeah there is.

I'd like to get into FEA as a career but don't have points 2, 3, or 4 and only a Masters so that job is way out of my league!

Maybe this isn't correct position for you, but you could apply. Worst thing they could say is no, then you won't be any worse off... You could look about and see if there is something with an entry level or in a similar industry as you (So you can leverage experience) to transition. You could also take the Ansys or Abaqus training courses, or other focused courses.

The ad mentions "PhD preferred" and ideal experience - neither of these are essentials. In reality, the specific modelling skills listed would only be learned during a postgrad anyway, so it's not a big barrier to entry. The biggest problem might be relevant work experience (not college stuff).

Yeah it's the industry work experience that is the main one that caused me to start this thread and the one that I don't have either.

I didn't apply as I thought it was just a bit too far out of my skillset but the ad has gone and no agency is advertising it either which would lead me to believe the position has been filled.

I guess ye were right after all.
