Club selection/purchase query

Howdy Folks,

Background blurb feel free to skip:

I'm back playing golf after an 8 year or so break, so I dusted off the old clubs and hit a few balls and got a round in the local open I wasn't happy with them they where an old set of blades my dad gave me when i was 15/16,they where in terrible condition as you could imagine I'm 30 now and the clubs where older than me so I went out and purchased a decent set of Wilson clubs and a shiny new ping putter, driver 3wood 4hybrid 5 iron - sand wedge
first extra purchase was a 64 degree wedge for those annoying green side shots,

I felt the gap between 3 wood and 4 hybrid was a bit too much so i went out and bought an additional hybrid and this is where I made a newbie mistake I bought a "3 hybrid" from wilson thinking that they where all kind of standardised lofts this one happens to be 17 degrees(that seems to be the loft of most 2 hybrids) and I really love hitting it but I find I still would like an additional club between it and my 3 Wood is there any suggestions of a club that should fit right in between them preferably Wilson in brand, I was kinda of told that a 5 wood would give roughly the same distance as it(the 17 degree hybrid) and would be a little less consistent to hit

thoughts suggestions are most welcome or any details you feel important that I have omitted

Sound like you could have 14 clubs already. 5 wood will be around 17/18 degrees but will do a little further than the 17 degree hybrid. Think the easy thing to do is grip down on the 3 wood will take 10/15 yards off the distance.
Distance at that end of the bag isn't that important, you are not going to hit many greens at over 200 yards with a 5 wood or Hybrid.

I carry a 3 wood and next is 18 deg hybrd instead of a 5 wood then a 4 iron i dont see an issue with your clubs step on the 17 deg if your really stuck!!

13 clubs in the bag at the moment, I'm a fairly straight hitter but lack distance, I am carrying 3 wedges so I thought something at that end of the bag might be more useful, Thanks a million for some input :-)

What are your distances for the longer clubs at present?

I would say I hit that hybrid about 160-180yards on a flush hit like I said I'm a pretty short hitter
I really couldn't say about the 3 wood off a fairway as I normally leek it out right from a tight lie but off the tee I would think it would be maybe 180-190 nice a straight too

Then why do you need a club to fill the non existent gap? (Don't mean that to offend.... See below)
If hybrid is going 160-180 and 3 wood is 180-190 then what gap are you eager to fill?

I actually threw my 3 wood of of the bag recently when I realised that I wasn't using it.
I asked myself the same question as above basically.... and I had no real answer.
My 3w went slightly further than my 3h on good shots but on average the 3h was probably longer (due to the fact I hit it straighter and more often) and into less trouble.
My attitude is that there's only a limited amount of love to go around for the longer clubs at my level.
If I can hit my driver and 3h well then I'm a happy camper. Removing the 3w has meant that I've focused on hitting the 3h better at range etc.
It has come on leaps and bounds since dropping the 3 wood.

Instead of adding a club maybe dropping one may do better things for your game.
And if you're giving less clubs more quality time then ball striking with them can only improve.

I see what you mean I suppose what I was looking for something as nice to hit as the Hybrid that would make the 3 wood a club for off the tee on the short par 4's, if this was the 80's I'd probably say I was looking for a 4 wood only easier to hit :-)

Spot on advise from Parlance again.

Probably the only time i have been stuck for a club is the 17th in Millicent. Beautiful hole, about 190 over water from the back. Only because the game was down to the wire.
I haven't ever come across that peculiar situation again, and probably would only use a couple of wedges if it came to it.
