Does anyone know of any good books or dvds to learn more about antiques or collectables? I'd prefer a dvd. It's to find courses on this subject in Ireland so this is the next best thing. Thanks

As has been said in another thread, you won't learn much out of a book - there's no substitute for hands on experience. It's the one thing that no night course or Google and the information superhighway will give you.

Miller's Guides http://www.millersantiquesguide.com/ are a good source of information and there are a variety of magazines available http://www.antique-collecting.co.uk/ but without throwing yourself headlong into collecting I think you will be struggling.

Thanks, I found the antiquecollector website and ordered a few dvds.

I agree hands on experience is the most important but books, dvds and courses can be used as additional sources to supplement, speed up and expand your knowledge. I don't think I'll learn about the specifics just from going out on my own. For example, I didn't know know exactly which metals where ferrous and non ferrous until I looked it up. I didn't know the difference between Art Nouveau and Art Deco until I looked it up etc etc
