Changing my name to the Irish Version

Seems it's the 'in' thing to do these days, but I've got different reasons!

You see...I've got one of those unusual surnames, one where people (on a daily basis) stare blankly when I introduce myself, then they take it upon themselves to add an Irish 'O' to my ole moniker!

To counter all this hassle, and believe me, it's a feckin' nuisance when taking a delivery, signing a receipt, or making a simple inquiry which requires giving my surname to folks only to have them stare open-mouthed before asking me to repeat myself.

Sooo...should I go all the way and change it to Irish and have done with it ?
    :P

No, forget about it right now, to avoid a long thread of stupid, pointless arguments.

In before the first "O'Hoolohoolohoolahan" hilarity.

Change your surname to 'Irish'. That way it can be in English and Irish at the same time.

Why don't you go all out and just make up a new name.... Like South East or Apple Oranges.

Its what the celebs are doing.

Very funny responses & thanks guys for making me laugh.
Seriously though, it's a one syllable name (not asking anyone to guess)
There are folks going about with the weirdest of names in barely pronouncable Gaelic, and nobody asks them to repeat themselves, but here's little ole mise, (with the simplest of monikers) get asked all the feckin' time.

What if your name actually is an Irish name?

This is like telling us you have the most beautiful, peachy, soft ass in the world but you won't let us see it to prove it.

I've got an Irish name and if you think you get black stares, I'd get 3 times more! I'm always repeating my name, at least 3 times to be understood. Can't really think of any name where the Irish is clearer than the English?

Weeelll, that'd be bad enough:P but someone who has used the name they were given at birth for and who changes their name to an Irish version just appears to be pretentious.

Don't do it, it's ridiculously pretentious to use an Irish name.

Really? Some people simply inherited those names. It's extremely pretentious of you to assume that all people who have an Irish name are simply showing off or trying to make a social/political statement. Inheriting an Irish family name from the bogs of Mayo is hardly pretentious in my case.

It'd be ridiculously childish/insecure to change my family name to the English translation so some people won't judge me based on some biased notions on my name. But at least now I have my answer as to why people always assume I'm middle class..

And lastly, a name is Irish no matter what language it's in - if it comes from this island it's Irish whether it's Ó Murchú or Murphy.

I suppose Máistir Scarta instead of hedgemeister wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Is it something like Peter Brian, so everyone knows you as Peter O'Brien!?

I trying to think of a comical name like Wilfred Mimsy or Donal Comeatonce!

The Irish name can cause problems , Know someone who gets stopped at US customs

they pronounce it "See-Hoe-Say-Him Cor-ban" , his mustache added to his mistaken arabic roots . his Kids name been in English and The his wife not taken his surname made it all the worse for him :D

Surely if people have trouble with your name, it's their problem not yours ...

I'm only taking the proverbial. There's nothing wrong with a lot of Irish names but some of the things people have called their kids are ridiculous. Imagine going through life called Cuchulainn or some other utter nonsense. There are a lot of pretentious Irish names floating about these days, someone must have published the bumper book of celtic mythology names during the boom.
