Team news: Clare make two changes for replay

    12 June 2014

Clare have made two changes in personnel for the Munster SFC quarter-final replay against Waterford this Saturday.

As expected, Shane Brennan returns for the unavailable Podge Collins who will be on duty for the hurlers for their Munster SHC semi-final against Cork.

The other change is also in attack where Barry Hartnett takes over for Jamie Malone.

Clare (SFC v Waterford): Joe Hayes; Dean Ryan, Kevin Harnett, Martin McMahon; Shane Hickey, Gordon Kelly, Ciaran Russell; Gary Brennan, Shane McGrath; Sean Collins, Enda Coughlan, Barry Hartnett; Martin O'Leary, Shane Brennan, David Tubridy.

pretty much the same team that lined out against tipperary in the division 4 final bar the barry hartnett for jamie malone switch, few people were expecting rory donelly to start , fair play to sean collins to stick to his guns too ,

a bit of a must win game despite the slightly favorable draw in the first round of the qualifiers for the looser's who will most likely face carlow bar a total shock

hopefully lessons will have been learned from last week , clare threw away a 5 point lead half way through the second half, and worse still a further 3 point lead heading into injury time , so hopefuly if we get a good lead tomorrow night we can hang on to it this time!!!

What's the word on the street with regard to the hurling?

Podge fit? Who's going to start inside? Cathal McInerney? Darach Honan? Someone else?

not much news to report as it is, no team news released only idle speculation , and in truth its probabley a good thing on our part here, normally davy fitz's thursday night selections change dramatically come sunday.

the likelyhood is there wont be too many changes to the team that lined out against cork in the all ireland final last year , maybe a change at the back with seanda morey or jack browne starting ahead of donal o donnovon who has missed half of the season so far with work commitments , most likely morey wil start

if honan is fit he will start alongside connor mcgrath in the full forward line , if not i would imagine peter duggen will be drafted in to play a similar role but there would always be the option of him playing further out the field too,

i cant see any starting place for cathal mac, it would make sense to play him beside mcgrath but any time he did anything productive in the league he ended up being substituted later in the game or dropped the next day, i am not sure how much time davy has for him, i think he sees him as more of an impact sub

in one way this is a season defining game for both teams sunday , a win puts you into the all ireland 1/4 in a worst case senario , the loosers will face the mine field of the qualifiers and as last year proved it can very much work in your favor as it can against you, dispite it paved our way to the alireland last year and the 3 games in 4 weeks in july had us in better shape then limerick for the semi finals last year, we would rather go the direct route this time

over the winter here there has been alot of talk about winning a munster and how long its been sence we last won one, the players have been talking them selves up about it too, which makes sundays game far more important then it may seem

Good win for the footballers tonight. The 2 Waterford midfielders got black cards in the first half and were massive losses. The second half was the Gary Brennan show, what a player. Once the second goal went in the Waterford heads dropped. Shane Brennan got the second goal but he should have had 2 goals scored before then but for some incredible misses. Good result though and the second game will definitely help them for the more slightly difficult challenge of Kerry next Sunday!

Well done to the footballers, no easy feet to go down to Waterford and win, I spotted a few of them heading into the Chyro chamber this morning around 8, they've had 2 tough games and now they have Kerry in the Park, hopefully there'll be a decent crowd there.

Delighted to see the footballers keeping there impressive season going strong.
Delighted with the two townies in the team especially ciaran Russell who has immense talent but hasn't always commited to the county teams.

Up at 5am for the hurling. Another very tight game is prospect but expect us to come out on top by 2 or 3 points.
    Hon the banner!!

First Clare match in years I'll miss today :(

Think we can win though :D

How bad are Honan's injuries, is he likely to play much part at all this season?

I would assume that if fit he would be preferred to Duggan

Duggan did ok but Cathal Mac has to start the next day.

Both midfielders replaced today, a bit worrying as well.
That said, Kearney and Walsh were really excellent

No shape and surely Duggan at full forward would have been the better plan.

I'm worried about Kelly, he had a very average league and again today wasn't involved. He's had no break and it's showing

Another shambles on the way for the local championship now, it was suggested that there wouldn't be any games in 2 weeks if we lost to Cork, expect a nice meeting during the week.

No chance of games now for months.

Galvin was replaced when at centre forward. I thought he was coming into the game nicely and had 2 good pts got in the 1st half.

He's not a centre forward by any stretch of the imagination.

    Weird game
The first goal killed us we never led after it our lads aren't good at chasing a deficit
    Tuohy had an ok game
In the back I think Browne should have been switched earlier but Morey didn't make much of an impact
Half back midfield and half forward line did nothing
Kelly & Podge were way too quiet for us to win
I'm not sure pulling off Donnellan made any positive impact the opposite I would think?
I wonder if Darach had come on earlier would it have made a difference?
Best man in a Clare shirt was Colm Galvin
Cian Dillon was excellent as always
The rest were well below par

Time for MiWadi & biscuits again
I'd worry about Liam now for sure 😢

To be honest, if we win another All-Ireland no one will care about Munster. If we get a home draw in the qualifiers I'd fancy against any of the 3 opponents, clearly you don't want to get Kilkenny at any stage of the championship but we'll have to meet them at some stage. We're the defending All Ireland champions, teams don't want to play us either :)

What happened up in the stands before the second half started. It looked like a bit of agro or something?

not sure , the ref held up the start of the seccond half as a result , i taught it was paramedics or a attending to someone, i didnt see any aggro really

i think when honan and cathal mac came on it made a huge diffrence to the forward line and had an impact on the last 8 to 10 mins , sadly the dammage was done well before that,

cork needed no motivation today to get up for this one , after loosing two major finals last year i imagine they will get one back on limerick the next day too . defensivley they looked alot sharper today , christopher joyce was stuck to tony kelly all day , but for me the lack of options or lack of a big man in the full forward line cost us big time

A lot of them would be students... but burnout from over-training is a distinct possibility.

You have to consider that Clare won the Ireland last year and were celebrating and touring the county, country and even abroad with the cup.

Cork on the other hand lost to Clare and had revenge for last and had to gain the respect of their own people again. Big psychological advantage to Cork.

Cork had two games to get match hardened and iron out the problem areas and improve their tactics. Clare sat on the wings waiting, watching and preparing with challenge matches etc.

Cork second game was over before the end and they didn't have to go flat out to win. Couldn't asked for better preparation.

there has been too many excuses branded about since last sunday , agreed james mcgrath didnt have a great game but he cant be to blame for clare giving away 2-11 from frees , first thing management have to look at is discipline

sunday we had davey having a go at the ref first and then his two cents on duel players and how they dont work..........despite one of the best players on the field was a division 1 footballer

but the best of all was the great malty mcdonough yesterday calling for an investigation in to the officials last sunday, a complete joke, like the late 90s the rest of the country are going to get sick of the sight of us fairly quickly if this stuff continues

the fact of the matter is we rarely ever have teams primed and ready for munster, we have an awful record in the last 10 or 15 years , it was clear to see from the intermediate game that cork were miles ahead of us , generally the intermediate game can be a good indicator for the senior game and what level of traning is been done behind the scenes.
we probably are not that far off where we were this time last year but as it stands we are a long way off alot of teams around the country

County championship goes ahead this weekend despite the senior and minor management requesting a postponement. Clubs wanted it to go ahead.

No harm to get back to the clubs and back to earth

County championship goes ahead this weekend despite the senior and minor management requesting a postponement. Clubs wanted it to go ahead.

the club championship is going to be changed back to a more knock out style tournament next year in the same format as the football championship, and infariness the sooner the better, the group phase creates far too many games and many of them can be meaningless enough

if clare reach the all ireland 1/4 finals at worst , then july will become a closed month as we might have have to play 3 games over 4 weeks . good to see the clubs getting there way for a change, anything like last year must be avoided at all costs

the only gripe i would have is asking county players to play championship for there club the day after county duty regardless of the oppisition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,845 ✭✭✭Hidalgo

The clubs took a very proactive role in ensuring games are going ahead. Think representatives met last night in preparation for the Co Board meeting tonight with the majority agreeing that they'd vote for games to take place.

Reason there wasn't a vote imo was because it would have been a landslide vote against county management's wishes to postpone.
Players are released to their clubs as of tomorrow.

Believe me. ..... There is a massive issue here that will eventually break into the media. I can't discuss it here but it is a scandal of epic proportions. Puts the whole lynch affair of 98 into the shade. So I would not be knocking davy or mcdonagh for comments passed in the post match arena. I think davy vaguely referred to it when he said " there is something I might talk about at the end of the year". Trust me on this. .
