I met men who would rob the eye from your head and no prison time will change that.

I think some people were born to live in prison, from your experience do you think that?

I've a mate called Hans Cuffe. I think he's one of them you're on about.

    Why did he go down?

Yea, I know one lad who was in prison twice when he was 20/21 and he's nearly 40 and not been back since. Has his own business, but he's a terrible sex addict. I'm sure that's a prison of it's own.

Me. Living proof you can be reformed. But your past never leaves you, not here in ireland anyway. Iv been offered two good jobs since finishing college. One is a sponsored masters and 2yr contract, the other is a tech admin transmission contractor. Thing is I need basic disclosures for one of them and its the one I want.

If I commited the crimes in UK they would be considered spent and wiped from memory. Shame Ireland does not have a similar arrangement.

So you think if you disclose your past, you definitely won't get a job?

Well I definitely have one (so there is hope). But the UK based one requires a basic disclosure. Im afraid when I get that back and send it to them they will not proceed with employment.

Know one guy who was in youth offenders and turned his life completely around.

Another who was in Joy, again sorted his demons and is a gent of a guy. Doubt he'll ever be in trouble again.

I was actually acquitted of all charges, eventually. Was a big case at the time.

I did however meet many reformed men. Some who were truly regretful of what they did and would never do it again. Moments of madness they called it. Of course I met men who would rob the eye from your head and no prison time will change that.

What did you allegedly do ?

The husband "done a bit of bird" in his early 20s. 9 months of an 12 month sentence. 'Twas long before I met him.

He said that after the first week in there he swore he was never going back. And he kept that promise to himself. He's a hardworking good man now - but was on the wrong path back then.

I know a fella who was off his head when he was young. Has been in about three or four times. In his late 30's now and just finished organising his second charity fund raiser; always goes on about how he wants to redeem himself and so on. So yeah, count him as reformed.

Lovely chap, made me question how I percieved criminals or "those types".

Wonder why he'd say it so.

I think this whole prison thing has the potential to do some good, as long as you are not in for something serious. I think that messing up in life can only leave you with two choices: A) You repeat the offense again and again and spend time in and out of jails. Or B) You realize that you have made a mistake, do your time and try to become a better person because of it.

I am off the opinion that those who mess up when young (teens to early twenties) can go on to become better people because of it. They learn that you have to adhere to the rules in society. Some people never make a mistake till they are 40 and because they are old, they dont get a second chance.

We all mess up and we all make mistakes. That is life.

    Me.
Several others I know as well, some of whom have Degrees and Masters now.
The thing is you never know if you know someone who has reformed as they are unlikely to be sharing that publicly.

I know someone (or rather knew someone) who did something sick and evil who after 14 years was released and within a year went on to do the most unthinkable and is now locked up for a very long time! I am ashamed to say I ever knew him to people who ask me.. Here I guess I'm safe.. Can people clean up, maybe but in my experience nope!

Is there any truth to the saying: 'The people most afraid of prison are the people who least deserve to be there'.

I was watching orange is the new black the other night and it made me think...

I know of quiet a few people who've been in prison, they have all either ended up back there or are on the way back in.

I can't think of 1 example of someone who's been imprisoned who now leads a normal life eg a job, law abiding friends, a happy existence of any type.

It must be so hard to do in fairness, unless of course your a genius at something, or can start your own business, who would employ you with a record?

Has anyone any examples of someone who has turned their life around, or is your chance of a normal life gone for ever with a criminal record?

Yes I have, spent many years in and out, now have a degree, job, just bought a house, and all that responsible stuff:):)
