Advice on Clubs

I have a set of clubs from the 90's and I'm well due an upgrade, so I thought I would ask the experts here for some advice!

I'm not a regular golfer but I do go out for a round every now and then when the weather is good. Im looking for a decent set of clubs without breaking the bank. Could anyone advise me as to what shops or websites are good value and which brands I should look out for?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

You should really look at buying second hand. I don't think there's anything to be gained by splashing out on new clubs if you're not a regular golfer. I've found a lot of value in good second hand clubs. Adverts.ie is a good place to start looking, it'll give you a rough idea of what's out there. If you're living anywhere west of the Shannon I couldn't recommend Golf Style in Galway highly enough. They have a large stock of second hand clubs and the staff are fantastic to deal with.

+1 on both counts Golfstyle are very competitive vs adverts I've found too.
They will advise you on what would suit too which is very handy considering you would be buying 2nd hand.

The best thing you could do IMHO is to have a very clear idea of what you need before you buy. I along with many golfers have bought gear that didn't exactly suit on occasion.

Thanks for the advice! Looks like Ill be taking a trip up to Galway. How much do you reckon (roughly) a second-hand set would cost?

That's a really open question.

I once bought an "old model" but new set of titleist ap1's 712 for €350

I've put in more modern model names there so it might explain. The 712 have been replaced by the 714 and there will only be a few more months on the 714. It was similar the time I paid the €350 for mine.

Do some googling and have a look at what might suit your game and I'll tell you what I'd pay if you want.

150-200 will get you a fairly decent set of second hand irons in my experience.

If you're buying a driver, 3 wood, hybrid and putter then you could pick up one of each for ~50 quid. They'll prob be just over 5 years old but there hasn't been massive changes since then.
