Never a fan of Bottom, nor really the young ones but The New Statesman and his appearances the last Blackadder series were absolute gold.

Loved him in Bottom, grew up watching it and saw it in the Point that time too. Was brilliant if a bit outdated now.

The first live Bottom video was brilliant when they forget their lines.

Rik: "Just shut up! Shut up and get on with the fúcking show!".

Awww, man, heartbroken, I grew up on Rick and Ade, terrible sad news, too young.

His first and only tweet ever:

Opening my very own Twitter to stop another bastard from doing it. So **** off & don't expect to hear from me any time soon. Love Rik x

Ah fcuk really? Clue about what?

Link? I know he played the mad father in "Man Down".
Going to have to watch all my Bottom dvds tonight with a bottle of whiskey to calm my tears down :(

They were due to make another series of Bottom together and they disagreed on how it should be made. I think they made up towards the end but Rik was disappointed the Ade didn't want to be a part of another series.

seeing the young ones at a very young age blew my f**ing mind!

Same here. It was so different to anything else.

A show where Adrian would be beating Neil, would then cut to Alexei Sayle ranting a load of bollocks and suddenly, low and behold, the Damned were performing Grimley Fiendish in the front room. Brilliant madness.

    RIP Rik.

One of the funniest men of a generation
Genuinely shocked at his early demise.
If you haven't seen Bottom Live then you haven't seen
(p)Rick, Richie Rich, Flasheart, A tosser and complete bastard that will be fondly missed.

At his best when at his worst

Big tributes pouring in for Rik. I can't disagree with a single one.
John Lloyd, who produced Blackadder, told the BBC: "He was an amazing guy.
"I worked with him on all sorts of things - Blackadder, notably, where he was quite extraordinary.
"He was the most extraordinarily good actor, as well as being an amazing live stand-up comic.
He added he was "great company".
"It was one of the great treats to see Rik Mayall live on stage," he said, describing him as "fantastically professional"
    Other tributes came on Twitter.
"Very sad to hear of the passing of Rik Mayall," said Monty Python's Eric Idle. "Far too young. A very funny and talented man."
"Growing up there was no one funnier," said The Mighty Boosh comedian Noel Fielding. "We will really miss you Rik Mayall you genius."
"So shocked to hear about Rik Mayall," wrote Jack Dee. "A wonderfully funny icon of British comedy."

David Walliams posted a video of Mayall making his dramatic entrance as Lord Flashheart in Blackadder.
"I am heartbroken that my comedy idol growing up Rik Mayall has died," he wrote.
"He made me want to be a comedian."
"Rik Mayall was just pure wiry, energetic, unpredictable humour poured into the shape of a human," said Charlie Brooker. "You couldn't not watch him."
"Shocking, shocking, shocking news," wrote comedian Rebecca Front. "Think of all the laughs we won't now have."
Director Edgar Wright, whose films include Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, said: "Shocked and saddened that a comedy hero is gone.
"For those who grew up on The Young Ones, Rik Mayall was one of funniest performers ever."
"Ah, dammit, I just heard the news," said Father Ted creator Graham Linehan. "Mayall was one of the funniest people who ever lived."

The Bottom boxset may have to be pulled out tonight. Some man was Rik, I've never laughed as hard or as much as I did with his antics as Richie with Eddie Hitler.

    One of the absolute greats.

    RIP, you absolute Bastard!

Lord Flasheart: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait a minute. Now I may be packing the kind of tackle that you'd normally expect to find swinging about between the hindlegs of a Grand National winner, but I'm not totally stupid. I've got the kind of feeling you'd rather we hadn't come.

Captain Blackadder: No, no, no, I'm very grateful. It's just that I'd slow you up.

Lord Flasheart: I think I'm beginning to understand.

    Captain Blackadder: Are... are you?

Lord Flasheart: Just because I can give multiple orgasms to the furniture just by sitting on it, doesn't mean that I'm not sick of this damn war: the blood, the noise, the endless poetry.

Ade also said that after the accident Rik's personality had changed quite a bit and he became very difficult to work with

Sad to see him die so young, a real talent

Richie: It's not very sexy, is it?
Eddie: No. I must say, I expected a lot more from "The Furry Honeypot Adventure".
Richie: I think this is for kids you know Eddie. I think those Hussein brothers saw you coming again. Well, what else did you get?
    Eddie: "Big Jugs"
Richie: [excited] "Big Jugs"! All right! [reads box] "A history of pottery in the nineteenth century." Anything else?
Eddie: Well this one's a sure-fire hit. Look. "Swedish Lesbians in Blackcurrant Jam".
Richie: Yabba-dabba-doo! [reads] No Eddie, it's "Swedish Legends in Blackcurrant Jam Making."
Eddie: Aw, come on, it's got to be dirty, it says "Swedish"!

    RIP Rik.

He was his usual mad character in that, always had his son on edge as he never knew what he was going to do to him next. He looked far from ill in that.

Bottom is that rare program that has me laughing no matter how many times I watch it, and I'm another that saw them live in the point all those years ago.

Edit, the genius Carnival episode is on tonight on Gold at 10.40 and then again at 1.55am.

i ... found his style of humour a tad OTT...

I think that was the point.

The unbridled, manic energy Rik Mayall brought to his character in Bottom is astonishing to take in.

He must have lost considerable weight each doing the live shows.

    RIP.

    Gold, Frankenstien and Grrrrr :o

    RIP

I was working in a record shop in 1995 for Christmas. They let us take home videos and CD's over night. On Christmas Eve i brought home a Bottom boxset and spent Christmas Day and Stephens Day watching it.

That and the Young Ones were two of my favourite comedies when i was a teenager.
