Colleague at work gets 38mpg from his. Mainly 20-30km runs on country roads. Not bad. 1.8 is meant to be much nicer to drive

Old type is capable of 40+. That 03-09 model is more thirsty, I'd be surprised if 35/36 is bettered tbh

I got 38 with similar runs and some shorter ones mixed. A long nonstop trip, 250km or so gives me about 43. A tankfull used entirely on very local driving, most under 1km, no trip more than say 5km, engine probably never reaching optimum temperature gives me 29.
    Mine is an 08 1.6.

according to my 03 avensis saloon, on the open road, by 3000 RPM, 100km/h, the average comsuption is somewhere between 9L-10L.
In the town, about 10.5L- 11.7L

In 2003, there were about 2500 toyota avensis sold with poor quality piston rings, that burned after certain amount of mileage. So there was a very common that the oil consumption could rise up to 1L/1000km (roughly 2-3weeks every day driving for work). Make sure, the oil level is always at the high mark. Otherwise you can expect to change the whole engine and catalytic converter system.
