As the ad says, think bike think bike. It's a natural thing for drivers to be looking out for cars. I am sure we've all had close calls with pulling out in front of cyclists or motorbikes.

I do that. The reason is that you don't want to establish a pattern of chatting the ears off the person and to be annoying so you leave it up to them to start the conversation at times. Sometimes I am not in the mood for a chat or actually could be very busy.

I can get this, but it's the folks who barely acknowledge you in passing, yet the day before they were all over you. Like they never met you before. Strange behavior. A simple smile or hello/nod of acknowledgement.

    Fat gene my ar*e

Its the lazy stupid gene and its the parents that have it. In this day and age, with google at everyone's finger tips there is absolutely no excuse not to provide healthy alternatives for fattening foods

If they had a minimum education they would know that Chips weren't on the five a day list!

There are still plenty of obvious obese people out there who are eating a 'healthy' diet, close to the food pyramid. Food types is only one aspect. Portion size is probably more important. There are some humans who are naturally heavier and fatter. Body composition and genes play a role. It's very difficult to ignore a large(r) appetite. We are all different. Some people fill up easier than others.

bullish1t. In the 60s less than 10% of US Americans were obese. Nowadays, about 33%. Fat genes don't change that much in 50 years!!

People use the "fat gene" as a kop out and an excuse to eat like ****.

It's calories out versus calories in. Simple science. Just because somebody has this fat gene doesn't mean they will get fat if you make the right choices. Sure you may have to work harder at it than some, but fcuk it, I have to work harder to run 54 seconds than Jeremy Wariner!

Worth bearing in mind that not all motorcyclists are the same, and most motorcycle fatalities are caused by oblivious car drivers. Note the stress on the word 'most'. There are indeed terrible motorcyclists. But there is a substantially larger number of oblivious dangerous car drivers.

I didn't mean all motorcyclists, just the ones like todays tool I met. I was turning in right, with a car behind me doing the same. Against oncoming traffic, motorcycle tool decides it's a great idea to over take both of us. He must have been doing well over 100 in a 60 zone. He was blessed he didn't cause a serious accident. He completely frightened the crap out of me.

I am aware that we all have choices, but it's not near as black and white as you make it. People aren't all the same. Some humans tastes and needs differ.

Appetites differ. Food likes and dislikes differ. It is as simple as calories in and out in a scientific sense, but it's how we as animals implement this and try to adhere to this that can be very very difficult for some people.

Not in anyway directed at you personally Ruby as i don't know what happened but a lot of motorists ddon't pay enough attention to motorcyclists. Pulling out, not looking ect....

How does this contradict the claim that some people are genetically predisposed to gain weight more easily than others? Or that people's behaviour is a complex function of their personality, history, and society, and not just whether they're lazy bastards?
Simple answers to hard problems on the other hand are lazy.

let's assume that this gene was as common back 50 years ago as it is now. Let's assume that this gene exists in Sweden, Switzerland and France to the extent it does in English speaking countries. Now how come obesity levels are not the same across countries and eras? Something more sinister at play here than an "It's all in my genetics" excuse.

No denying that some people have such a gene, but this gene existed 100 years ago also, when obesity levels were almost non existant. In the end of the day, if you do the right things then you don't allow the genetics to take over. Accepting that you can't do anything due to having a fat gene while tucking into a dirty bacon sausage and egg roll is a complete cop out.

What about the Japanese. Only 3% obesity. Is this because they are fortunate enough to avoid the dreaded fat gene, or is it because they eat healthy food in adequate portions and get regular exercise?

I think it's because they get so frustrated while trying to eat with chopsticks, that they just abandon their half-eaten meals, and go out and run 2:08 marathons. I think cutlery is at fault.

People commenting on fatties. Who gives a f€ck if little tommy has burgers for brekkie, lunch and dinner.

My fit, healthy, slimline son is going to be a heart surgeon and will make a fortune from all the horizontally challenged chunksters.

    See a need, fill a need ;)

I absolutely despise the casual racism/sectarianism/xenpobhobia that exists in this country.
