Didn't we steal some City scouts? Swings and roundabouts...

Jaysus. Whatever about taking their scouts, taking their swings and roundabouts is just scummy, IMO.

    We really are the worst.

Liverpool have advertised for an Academy Director, as for City well they are spending big but unless they actually use the young talent bring through the place it will be nothing more than a hen house for export. If I were a parent of a talented boy-child I'd not rush to City at this point, even though I'm sure the facility will turn some heads with its shiny large scale newness.
Just how many developed players could come through at City? If they are short in any position they just go out and spend £25m on a reserve.

It would take some player to even earn a place on the bench with those sorts of squad players.

Look at chelsea since Abramovic took over.

As long as they think short term with the first team manager that will remain the status quo, because if the manager knows he has to win something almost every year, then hes always going to want to buy in the proven player for 25m as opposed to the talented kid from the reserves.

That's where the loan system should come into play. Let them prove themselves elsewhere and save them spending the 25 mil

But then if you can afford that, what does it matter whether you bring a player through or buy them?

Only risk is that kids won't join if they don't see a realistic possibility of breaking through. They are more likely to look towards the likes of us, Everton, Southampton or Arsenal, who have shown that we will give young players a fair chance...

    Exactly.

I suppose it doesn't really make much difference overall as the vast majority of kids in the development sections of bigger clubs will never get more than a few cup/sub league appearances.

Really, there's only us and Southampton atm with any significant numbers of home grown players in the first team. Pretty poor return for the investment going into the youth systems.

I think we have a decent model. We are bringing in 15/16 year olds like Sterling, Ibe, Jones, Trickett-Smith and Teix (a little older), who have already shown a little more than your average underage player. The risk is lower, and the chance of finding a gem within 20/30 other academy's is better than only bringing through your own.
The selling club gets a modest fee for a player that they might not have gotten the best out of, and we avoid paying the kind of fees that Arsenal paid for Walcott and Ox...

Pretty much that he had one good season and needs to have more to be a world class striker

    Good!

Hope he calls him worse and then signs a new contract with Real which is something we should all be looking out for.

For me it will be a big indicator on where Suarez ends up this season.

Think Ancelotti is adamant regardless of what Perez thinks in regards to Suarez, Ancelotti wants Benzema to get a new contract. Really likes him.

If they could get £25M for him (1 yer left) and buy Suarez for £85M - I don't think there is £60M difference between them. What they need is better back up for him and Ronaldo to get the goals.

Maybe they'll take a punt at Muller?

85 million wouldn't get Suarez would need well in excess of 100 million I would think if it was straight cash.

Who knows Madrid's transfer policy is just buy the best. Casillas must be the last player through their academy that has an impact in the first team???

85M sterling would go an awful long way towards landing Suarez i'm afraid.

Getting in excess of 100M for him is a dream unfortunately.

And before you bring up Bale, Suarez is 27 now so that would have obvious considerations for any would be purchasers

I know your probably joking but I would actually love to see us bring Cortese in & apply his methods to our squad & see if he could get the same improvement in results he saw for Southampton. Dont know how well he would work under Ayre, he strikes me as an all or nothing type of guy.

I have huge admiration for the way he went about improving Southampton organization off the pitch to give them the best chance on it. Imo every club in the prem should be taking a leaf out of his book.

For anyone who fancies a read up on the type of stuff he brought in there:
A presentation to the players in April last year did not ask if Southampton can win the Premier League, but how can they win it?

Nothing was left to chance. Everything was planned, analysed, discussed. The club's poor away form was one issue. Why did they struggle?

Cortese refused to accept the club's geographical location as an explanation. Players were asked to fill out questionnaires. What time did they wake up at home? What were their habits? Did their children wake them, did the dog? The results were analysed and changes were made.

Then the 45-year-old focused on the environment. Now, when Southampton travel away from home, the hotel is often booked for two nights rather than one. On the first night, club staff arrive and clean the already pristine rooms. They vacuum up every particle of dust that might cause illness or carry a bug.

Then bespoke mattresses are placed on each bed, tailored to each player. The duvets, the pillow cases and the sheets are washed and ironed by the club, using the same washing powder and the same methods. Wherever the players are, their bed smells and feels the same.

The same applies to food, with the club chef travelling ahead of the squad to each and every hotel. Marginal gains were everything to Cortese.

On the field, the whole team, rather than just the defence and goalkeeper, were awarded clean sheet bonuses in order to promote a team ethic, rather than any division.

Your probably right and a lot of 'if's and buts' would need to become fact but we are linked with a lot of players and also in the process of a total revamp of Anfield.

It's bound to raise eyebrows if we land most of those targets and some links are more than just tentative.

This thread is going to be continuously filled with talk of Suarez being sold until he is sold and then replaced by talk of how we should never have sold Suarez and wasted the money.

Tiresome, as there not a hint of him leaving and unlike last year he has said he is staying with Liverpool and not spoke about moving.

Suarez is an all round footballer can do almost everything, not many like him in World Football at the moment.

Easy to forget he has scored 54 league goals in 66 games the last two seasons and 17 assists. That's incredible, Liverpool would be stupid to not get over £100 million. Benzema is wrong Suarez has been brilliant for the best part of two years now.
