Can I see another GP in my town on medical card?

My (male) GP has recommended another GP in the town (female) that specialises in coil insertions etc.

Money is tight at the moment, so I would rather not pay fees, but if I have to it's not the end of the world, I'd just like to know. Thank you.

It shouldnt be a problem to see the GP. Just give them a ring and tell them your GP has referred you for the procedure and you have a medical card

I don't think the coil is covered by the medical card though?

The the copper coil and the minerna IUS are covered by the medical card.
IF your gp can't do it then another can and put in a claim form the same with a family planning clinic.

That was my main concern, as my own GP doesn't insert them, and this female GP does them routinely.

Really?? I had the coil in and when it was time to replace it my doc said that it wasn't covered by the medical card anymore so I didn't get it back in,she gave me a prescription to get it though I couldn't afford it!! Will have to look into it again!!

I don't know about whether the mirena is covered, but I had to pay for my copper coil (about 40 euro). I went to a family planning clinic though, as doctors are routinely only practiced in one type of coil and I had a bad experience with a doctor who'd never before inserted a copper one although thought she could do it. There's a good bit of risk attached to getting this done by someone who hasn't been trained in them all, and in dealing with the potential insertion problems - I'd advise the family planning clinic. Insertion covered by card.
