Hi guys, looking for some advice. The Hard drive on my 2010 MBP failed on me a few months back and after bringing it to the Genius Bar this was confirmed. I'm now looking to get it back up and running, what are my best options? Should I replace it with an original hard drive or can I get a solid state one for it? Also how do I go about installing the OS on it?

    Thanks

Get yourself an SSD, they're fairly cheap and a good upgrade. Be realistic about how much space you need as well - do you really need that 500gb SSD?

Also, for the OS, if you have Time Machine backups you can install straight from that. If not, you'll need a USB stick with the OS on it. The other option is that if the Geniuses are having a good day and you're not too far from them, they might install it for you if you ask them nicely.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated! Yeah I have a 2TB external hard drive in the house so I'm not going to go mad getting a big one. Do you know how I can find out which SSD will be compatible with my MBP seeing as it's not an original part for it?

A quick Google says that your machine only supports 3Gbps (like mine, late '08) so I had a look for 3GBps drives. I ordered this one a few weeks ago, fitted it in five minutes and it's running great. Good price too:

+1 on the SSD, makes a massive difference.

Should be the standard in all Apple computers now & most likely will be before the end of 2014.
