Not illegal, not stupid but it's fine if you don't like it.
A lot of older cars and non Euro cars were designed where front plates aren't essential and with that, there's no plate area on the front and a front plate absolutely ruins the look of the car.

And what's wrong with "fiddling" with cars?
You must realise that the majority of owners on the forum "fiddle" with their cars?

What's the 1.8 petrol like on the mk4 golf gti?

Depends on the model but generally they're a good engine.
They came as a 150bhp and 180bhp, both are basically the same set up AFAIK and tat VAG engine is used in most of the companies hot hatches of the era.
The S3 and TT both made 225bhp with it as standard.

Oh no, I've nothing against messing around with bits and bobs on your car, sure I do it myself. What I mean with the likes of changing all the grilles/bumpers, side skirts, the boo thing on the exhaust etc. I appreciate that some of the posters here might be into that, and fair enough, fire away - it's just something that I wouldn't be into or like the look of on a car :) Each to their own.

It's the cool brigade that put the reg plates on the windscreen!! The same people that will have a lovely 3 (the odd time a 5) series slammed to the ground and fiddled with....sigh

And yes it is against the law, not to mention stupid looking.
"Permanently affixed and visible to the front of the car"

A number plate permanently affixed to the front windscreen meets these conditions, so how is it illegal?
It is stupid to do unless all tax/nct etc are up to date as you will draw attention from AGS but not illegal.

And now I want to get an E34. UK seems to be the only job for those though, very very few around here.

You might have trouble getting one insured as a daily. A lot of insurance companies don't like anything over 15 / 20 years old.

He could get it as classic insurance and keep the yaris? Alternatively I know (from getting quotes on the carina) that Liberty will give competitive quotes on 18-20 year old cars.

There big differences between the 1.8T in the golf and that in the S3/TT and Cupra R, Turbo, intercoolers, block, head, internals all different, this is very evident when it comes to remap time.

The are a great engine but the are high maintenance and if not looked after could cost a pretty penny to bring back to former glory.

If you could pick up an early 01 or before 3dr MK4 GTI with leather reacaros etc and remap it, it would a nice cheap car (potentially) you will see 195bhp out of remap on a 150 version, the 180 will go 210 ish after a remap. The S3/TT/Cupra R engines remap to 260 but you are going up a level in running costs and maintenance needs. There is a nice cupra R for sale on Autostadt at the moment but i don't know a whole lot about it.

Both of ye are talking about the 1.8T which is different to the 1.8.

Would shoved down the gap between windscreen and dashboard count as permanently affixed though?

Not if it is not "affixed" and visible from the front, no.

How do you permanently affix a plate to a windscreen?
There is a reason screws are used to affix plates to cars by garages and not double sided tape ;)

Double sided tape is perfectly acceptable, looks better and many garages do it.

I believe that it is perfectly legal to have it in the windscreen however IMO it's pretty stupid looking and for the most part associated with slack jawed individuals, usually sporting some sort of tracksuit and who's idea of fun is driving from one end of the town to the other all night.

Because they are mutton handed apes? Affixing number plates by screws should be illegal lol. Double sided tape has held number plates on my last 4 cars no issues whatsoever.

I recently was one of these slack jawed idiots but it's purely as my front plate was broken off thought I had double sided tape turned out I didn't .
I hated the idea of driving with it on the dash.
But more hated the millions of drill holes in the bumper thanks to various garages.
The plate is now held on with screws purely as the holes and screws where there!

I was talking to this guy from the US, he imported his Volkswagen Beetle over here and he is on American insurance as well, which is only $500 per year (about €370). Apparently it covers him and the car even though he lives and works here. I wonder if any of us can get can get insured through them like that as well?

I bet if he read all the fine print on his American policy...he'd find that he's not covered! I wouldn't take his word for it anyway, most policies that I know of will have clauses on how long you are insured outside of your home country.

Its handy not having to fork out a couple of grand at the time, however its a massive pain in the arse for about three years after a claim, so I disagree that its good when you need to use it :pac:

If its anything like over here you would also need a permanent address in the US also, would you not?

You could pull a Dublin Bus and pretend you have enough money to cover your own liabilities.

Don't they need to lodge a bond of €5 million or something?
If so, this would be something I would love to do. Assuming I win the lotto!

Yeah, the person who owned my car before me, which is why one side of my drivers seat is now flat as a pancake

On a related note, is it possible to switch the drivers and passenger seats around with Recaro seats, or is there something specific about the seat that determines which side it should be on? There is a level on both sides of each seat for folding it forward.

I don't think it's an issue, as long as you can fit the seat belt buckle it should be fine.

The only seat I've had trouble with was a Bride Zeta III, I was about 95kg then, sat in it again a few weeks ago at about 82kg and it was dead comfy.
There's a bit to be said for trimming down for cars. :o

Or if you are an americant like me, just buy appropriate cars. Then again at 95 odd kilos I think I would be grand anyway. There's only been one car I couldn't fit in so far (a civic with recaro seats) but I was over 100kg then.
