Just a quick question, wondering what everyone else thinks.

Rté spent just €211,000 on Eurovision this year, in comparision to:
BBC - £310,000 (€373,493) who have an internal process.
    SVT - €697,000 (3rd 2011, 1st 2012, 14th 2013, 3rd 2014) X-factor style process
    ITV (Azer) - €1,136,311 (8th 2008, 3rd 2009, 5th 2010, 1st 2011, 4th 2012, 2nd 2013, 22nd 2014)

I think one of the TV3 executives said last year they would have €350,000 available for choosing and supporting an entry.

    What does everyone think?

I think that's a TV3 Executive trying to stir trouble for RTE. It's very easy to make a grand gesture of saying they'd have €350,000 available for choosing and supporting an entry, when they're not even a member of the EBU. You can't enter when you're not part of the organization. Now it would have been different if TG4 made the offer.

Anyway there's a strong chance that they might not even be around within the next 18 months.

TV3 hardly invested in their GAA coverage, why would they bother investing in Eurovision? Their attitude seems to be to buy rights to popular shows/events and put 6 minutes of ads during every break. They don't care less about the quality of what they televise.

TV3 come across as nothing but amateur, even more so than RTÉ do.

Give it to TV3 who are unlikely to survive another year? Might not be a bad idea...

Only open to members of the EBU. TV3 aren't members of the EBU.

If they were ever allowed to join they'd be leaving again after a few weeks. They're not a station that wants to be part of a club that has membership fees. :D

I'm surprised that BBC spent so little but UK still have automatic go-through to the final section.

I'm sure there's more to it than the figures quoted.

The figures don't include EBU membership and the Song Contest participation fee.

The BBC, as one of the Big-Five automatic finalists, are one of the five largest financial contributors to the EBU organisation via their membership fee. In 2006 the BBC's membership fee was 56 times more than Bulgaria's for example.

The BBC, as one of the Big-Five automatic finalists, also pay a higher Eurovision Song Contest participation fee. In 2010 RTÉ's fee was €63,000 while the BBC paid approx €333,100. The big countries higher fees allows smaller countries to take part because their participation fees will be lower.

They aren't even an EBU member, so the question doesn't arise really.

And it's all very well putting forward an entrant..how would they pay to host it should their entry win?

Christ they don't even have HD never mind money to do this. Imagine the modern soft porn musical review that is Eurosong as seen through a net curtain with cotton wool in your ears.
