Tamboran have announced that they are to drill a shale gas well in the old quarry in Belcoo, just across the river from Blacklion, Co Cavan.
Details here...just spreading the word. Do not sit on the fence.

Say goodbye to community togetherness Belcoo. These resource companies always seem to use a divide and conquer policy towards the communities they set up in.

What is worse, the fracking or the hippies the fracking will attract?

About time. We need a domestic source of fuel. If we don't tap the resources in Leitrim it will just be drilled for from the Northern side anyway.

The vast majority here seem either vehemently opposed or of the can't be bothered to think variety.
the fact is one only has to look at externals like vast road networks cutting swathes through rural communities, the factual increase experienced in other parts of the world of sexual violence and drug culture as migrant labour is shipped in to operate these wells, (not to mention the vast evidence that exists of contamination of water table and increase in seismic activity) to be opposed. but some will sit on the fence anyways and look on as the government gives away their mother earth to this savagery.
i will be away for weekend and plugged out..so i was just passing on the word. Get ready.

Your concern is that those working at the drilling will bring sexual violence and drug abuse? Oh sweet lord!

You see..... no one gives a toss about what happens in Co Leitrim.

I believe they do human experiments in Co Leitrim

No. It is one of the consequences proven elsewhere. Google it for those who are amusing themselves with the idea. it is the least of my concerns personally when |i think of the environmental degradation but go ahead and laugh. it is a factual consequence in US neighbourhoods. Wow im pretty amazed at the level of assholism on this board..now I'm ''lol''ing

We have plenty of resources without resorting to putting the greater resource that is the Shannon at risk. Agriculture is our biggest industry that was many waste products that can be used to produce energy.

You do realise that this story all started with a website called Vice who also ran stories that Nigerians are injecting themselves with a cream to make them white, that Catholics go for exorcism for healing rather than to doctors, that a guy ate his own hip as art...
You might want to get some credible sources.

    But it's only Leitrim! :)

This opinion really boils my blood, "Oh, it's only Leitrim".
Leitrim is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled counties in Ireland, and relies heavily on tourism to bring money and employment into the locality.
Not only is fracking extremely dangerous to the environment (wrt the chemicals used during the extraction process), but it is also an extremely unsightly process.

I can't see tourists travelling to see the extraction rigs of Leitrim

The town land is in Leitrim as well. Hence the planning application is for Belcoo Leitrim.

Seriously? Google results with less than creditable news sources - anyone could write and do write these articles. I read a National Geographic article on Fracking in the US and there was no mention of this.

Uhm, actually if you have log in facilities at Tamboran's own web site it is there. And as for Vice being disreputable, I cannot say so. I am only a tad familiar with their work, but I have seen some good journalism there. if you want your news cut up into small digestible pieces by the main stream media and insist on denigrating anything that is a bit beyond your ken or zone of comfort then by all means soak up the so-called news you are drip fed as ''truth''. Though those stories sound silly that you have quoted, as far as i know they are actually true..hahah...people are kerrazy out there...lol.

Actually i think i will ask a Mod to close this thread if that's possible. The level of stupidity here is too high. Go back to sleep.

It's deciding which ones they are is the problem.

There's plenty of space and bugger all people - frack away, as long as it efficiently taps natural resources, complies with EU regulations and provides tax revenue. It hasn't done America's tourist industry any harm, and it's a country that has become energy independent because of it, and soon will be an exporter through LNG port terminals.

Should it lead to gas at half its current price, like in Uncle Sam compared to Europe, then tear away - better than relying on Russians and Arabs with their unstable situations/supply/price hikes.
