Putting an animal out it's Misery

If I was absolutely certain that nothing could be done, then yes.

Broken limbs or knocked unconscious, I'd bring the animal to the nearest veterinary hospital.

25 or 30 years ago a sweet dog was mushed by a car near where I live. I came to it and could see clearly that it was near death bunt still suffering. I squeezed on it's throat with my thumb as I stroked his head - and let it pass. I cried afterward, a lot, but I was totally happy I had done the right thing.

It's a tough question, people who hunt would probably know how to put an animal out of it's misery quickly but the average person wouldn't.

My father could snap an animals neck correctly in a second but I wouldn't have a clue nor would I have the stomach to do it.

Showing mercy is not cruel though.

The only example I can think of was my family driving along the road & hitting an opossum.

The thing was broken open around its waste however still moving & would have faced a bad death.

My dad had a tool box in the boot, took out a hammer & 1 blow to the opossums head finished its pain.

No cruelty.
Just wrong place at the wrong time.

(At least it wasn't a skunk!)

People who own cats should be familiar with this as they often bring half dead animals into the home.

A bird flew in to my window once when I was a kid. It had several broken bones and clearly wouldn't survive. It took all my courage to lift a heavy rock and after a moment's contemplation I smashed it down.


Wouldn't you know it, there was an indentation in the rock which landed perfectly over the bird. It was like a bad movie where the building is going to fall down on someone but they pass through the window unscathed. I couldn't bring myself to do it again. I brought it down to a neighbour who shot it.

Mildly related, last year I had to bring my cancer ridden cat to the vet to be put down. She had chewed on her tumours and was bleeding, she was old, it was time. She seemed to perk up in the vet's office and was nuzzling me as if nothing was wrong. We went thought with it and the vet gave her the injection. I was stroking her head and looking in her eyes, in 10 seconds her pupils had dilated and a few more seconds she was gone. It was incredibly painful for us, but it was fast and humane.

If its a small animal, the heel of your shoe is quick.
