If I found myself in the OP's situation I would have no problems telling them to piss off ,the neck ,If they don't like people smoking around their kids then don't bring them to a place where they will be highly likely to encounter smoke/smokers.

I was never brought into a bar as a child

You must have had a fairly sheltered upbringing so. My parents woundn't even be big drinkers yet I would have been in the pub fairly regularly as a young lad for various different reasons e.g. Watching mathes, after dad playing a match, parties, family gatherings, out for food etc etc.

Children shouldn't be in the pub at night, simple as.

Not being in pubs as a child = a sheltered upbringing? Give me strength. My parents are teetotallers and as such, I think I was in a pub maybe twice as child. They didn't go to pubs as they found them tedious.

OP was talking about the daytime. You're right of course, but they shouldn't be there in the daytime either.

It was 7pm on a Friday night - right when all the post-work crowd come in to have a few drinks. It as by no means rowdy, but was certainly going to be loud and busy with lots of people drinking and smoking outside.

I find this story hard to believe for one reason.

    Sun?

When is it Sunny and warm in Ireland?

But in all fairness as a parent myself who isn't a smoker, the OP should have told them to feck off. The cheek of some people! If they want to drink in a smoke free environment they should go home and enjoy their garden.

Kids shouldn't be in pubs full stop.
