The score you receive in the UK can be used in Ireland. This is not a new phenomenon, I know a lot of people doing grad med, and GEM students at the RCSI open day, who advise everyone to sit the UK exam to try gain extra points. Obviously this is not a guaranteed way of doing better, you may not perform on the day etc. but the percentile curve will tell you that this year a 57 in Ireland was the equivalent of a 60 in the UK (ie. you did better than 79% of the other candidates). The exact reason for this is anybody's guess, maybe the more people that do the exam, the more who are there just to try it as a dry run etc. and that may increase the floor effect.

I do strongly advise sitting UK, not least as a practice. That's what I did and then I didn't need the second attempt.

That said, I'd still like to see the actual source for the difference in the percentile curves.

Hi everyone, sorry I am new to this thread but I have a quick question. Basically I got 54 in my GAMSAT which is way below what I thought I'd get but my choices atm are:

    Ucd
    Rcsi
    Ucc
    Ul,

My question is, say someone has UL as their first choice but they have a similar or lower GAMSAT score, would they then be awarded that place over me because it was their first choice or how does this work?

Also does anyone has access to the percentile curve for last year? :)

Suppose there is only one place left, if you have identical scores then regardless of what preference you both have it placed on you CAO, it will be a process of random selection for the place.

It's identical to the regular CAO process in that respect.

so, you could get UL (as your third choice) over someone who has UL as their first choice, if you have a better score than them.

Thanks very much, that actually answers my question. Also does anyone know what chances I have of securing a place? I'm a uk applicant so EU!

With 54 I figure you've a high chance of Limerick:) I say this as it was 53 last year and number of applicants are down this year:)

Are you looking for the 2013 UK or an earlier one?

I'm just wondering if this is speculation? I hear a lot of people mentioning that the UK exam is easier?? Can you shed some light on why this is???

    Thanks.

How the test is marked is a slight mystery to me but I think the UK(september) exam has a higher average score because a lot of uni students have all their summer holidays to study.
IMO its not that the exam is easier but that people are better prepared.

In Australia some students are gearing up for the Gamsat for years while doing their first degree. The average result is far higher over there.

It's tough to stomach a score that appears low, especially since many of us are probably well used to getting straight A's, but it's definitely a test that can be prepared for and worked at.

Having said that, my score dropped from 54(London 2013) to 53 (Dub 2014). I'm a terrible essay writer according to ACER.

According to ACER we're all morons :)

Morons with a MINIMUM 2.1 degree .... lol.

I got a 45 in Section II after what I smugly assumed was the finest two pieces of writing I ever put down on paper.

If the same curve applies for section scored I'm in the bottom 5% for Section II !
    This makes me sad :-(

Naturally, I began one essay at the front of the answer booklet, but the 2nd essay I started from the back of the same answer booklet. Did everyone else do this?

I'm fine with the result as I have a 54 but I want to blame someone other than myself instead of recognising that I'm a terrible writer... :-)

I can't wait to go back to college, office jobs are the pits!

That was one of my biggest fears prior to the release of the results, having worked in an office in London for the last year I was dreading that I would have to return to working in finance! Thankfully I don't think that will happen, just praying that Limerick will stay at 53 or drop!!

Are scores for ucc likely to drop... I'm praying all uni cut offs drop by 3-4 points lol... Anyone has access to 2013 curve?

This is the link to the 2013 curve, it was working up until now but I'm apparently forbidden today! Give it a try anyway

Also, I'd say it's highly unlikely but I'll join you in praying that all cut offs drop by 3 points :P

No still forbidden! Do you know roughly what it looks like! Because if scores were higher last year and there are apparently less applicants this year... Then GAMSAT cut off might just drop by a couple of points!! :) . I'm really hoping for RCSI, I love that uni

Anyone have any idea what UCC dropped to in round 1 and 2 last year? Or did it drop? Can't seem to access it on the CAO website!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 Poppy1314

Couple of pages back somebody gave the instructions of how to search CAO pages! Ucc seemed to drop to 54* I'd say it was 2nd round at that point! I'm hoping it drops from 56 again this year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 person78

Go to UCC here and is says 54:

    www2.cao.ie/points/lvl8_13.pdf

As for the 2013 percentile curve it was a bit different but I couldn't say for certain how, maybe someone who did the exam last year can still access it on their results page?

Round 0 Scores since GEM started. Bear in mind that these are only the points for the first offers, so people went in on less. Most of these were at random selection also.

Thought I'd repost this from Beardmaster.

Most courses (UCD excluded) have seen a 3/4 year trend towards lower scores ... I'm hopeful that RCSI or UCD will drop a point this year.

Congrats to all on their results ! To anyone disappointed, keep your chin up and keep at it ! There's a good few here on the cusp of obtaining a place !
Anyone else fairly confident of getting UCD ? I say that, but I won't believe I've got it until I have the offer in writing... Can't wait now

UCC went from 56* to 54 last year and from 56* to 55* the year before.

    Hi everyone

First time commenting though I enjoy reading the forum. I took the GAMSAT in March and sadly got 52...I'm praying UL drops this year :)

But why I am really commenting is that for all of you who are on the fence and feeling disheartened about the GAMSAT and whether you will ever manage to pass it...I was in the same boat for 3 years, everywhere I applied I was refused. I was beginning to feel I would never get into a uni. It was this time last year that I applied for medicine in Budapest...within 2 weeks I got my place :)

I really love it here, though I am sure you are wondering why I am trying to get home. Purely financially as the Irish banks don't support loans for studying abroad. But for those of you whom this is no issue I would highly recommend any of you who cannot face the GAMSAT again but know medicine is your dream to consider studying abroad. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Lastly for those of you successful in your results, I take my hat off to you, weldone!!! :D

I thought I saw on this thread that the 2013 Round 0 offers came out in July?

Otherwise, I'd be looking at handing in my notice in July in the hope that things work out in the August offers. Now, I should be OK, but it'll take some b**** to declare I'm quitting to go to med-school, before I get the offer....

Surely things can be organised better than this???

Quick question; I had originally only applied to rcsi and ucd! Recently I added UL and ucc... Will my application be considerd by them? and do I need to send them anything special or is it just a matter of selecting them on the cao website?

I think they're good, once you have it on the CAO. And you have submitted all your documents (e.g. previous transcripts). Ring the CAO for peace of mind though, I know I would.
