Saved family €4,000, shockingly ungrateful

My other half's brother and his girlfriend moved to Australia in May 2012, we offered to store their possesions in our spare bedroom so they didn't have to put it into storage, saving them €2,000 a year. At the time when we offered to take the stuff they were going for a year. However they stayed longer abroad and these belongings are due to be taken tomorrow morning. So we have had the stuff 2 years, saving them €4,000.

What I have an issue with is the fact that they haven't spoken to us or contacted us in those 2 years. When they decided to stay longer abroad they told my oh's parents who told us. We had to move house soon after this as our rent went up and we couldn't afford it, so we had to move all their stuff with us. They have a lot of stuff, it fills a double bedroom floor to ceiling. We were never botherd by this, ok it was annoying to move all their stuff as well as ours but they're family. But we never got a message to say thanks for taking the stuff for another year, nothing.

But possibly the worst part of this and the part that makes me want to say something is that they have been sending presents to the brother's 2nd cousin and have ignored our daughter who is his niece and goddaughter. It's not necessarily the lack of gifts but they don't even send a card or a message on Facebook for her birthday or even to ask how she is. While they send the cousin easter, christmas and birthday presents. These children are the same age and I honestly think leaving a child out is dispecable.

They moved to England in Janaury, again they planned to come home but chanaged their minds and didn't tell us, and didn't feel the need to take their possessions back. It is only because we are moving to a different county that we cant keep their stuff any longer. When we told them, again, no reply but they spoke to oh's parents about it, saying they were broke (both working full time, one in a manager position, the other on commission, while living rent free with family) oh's parents offered to pay for a van they could drive over to collect their stuff, they said no and arranged a courier to bring it over for them instead. I was happy that it was going and I wouldn't have to think about it anymore, until the last 2 days.

Yday while we were packing up our house, more of their stuff was dropped off. We were never informed about a drop off, a man turned up with a van unloaded the stuff and said this was to be added to the stuff being removed by the courier. My oh's father came over that evening and took a picture of all their stuff, which barely fit the room. Saying it was insane and they at least owe us a night out. He then put the picture on facbook making a joke about them opening a furniture store. They got mad. The girlfriend left a comment about how she would prefer to see a pic of our daughter as she hasn't seen any in a while and this is were my blood is boiling. They have ignored us and our daughter for 2 years, not even saying thanks for all the stuff we have done. They never comment on pics of our daughter (of which their is plenty) but are all over the cousin, yeah I know petty facebook but the fact that she wrote that like she pretends to care is driving me insane. We even had to write up an inventory for the courier of their stuff, measuring every box and what the contents was. I e-mailed them this last week, I was very friendly asking how they they were, hope the new job was going well. I then asked them to let me know when the courier was coming, again they let oh's parents know and not us.

Should I be angry?, should I say something?, how would you feel?

Leave their shíte out on the lawn and then take a picture of it. Put up on Facebook.
Won't be long before they come looking for their stuff.

    It's a bit ridiculous really.

They are obnoxiously ungrateful and entitled. Don't let them drag you into an argument where you run the risk of looking ungracious. But never do them a favour again either.

part of this could be embarrassment, give them a little lee way and see how it goes.
If you want to say something, tell them to talk to you directly if they want something and not to be worried, perhaps they need a bit of encouragement/support at this stage.
Best of luck, relationships are difficult enough

Stop letting selfish people take advantage of you. You should have told them their stuff was going into a skip if they hadn't taken responsibility for it after the first year you agreed to hold it for.

Sell it, keep 4,000 if you get that much - send them a receipt for payment of 2 years storage. Post Facebook picture of you on your holiday...!

Its not shocking, some people are self centred, ungrateful and will take advantage every single time, leaving a wake of pissed off friends and relations. Either call them on it or simply accept they are ego centric users but don't let it eat away at you.

Put there stuff into storage and send them the details and bill! Saying ye had enough and needed the room and 2 years is long enough without a valuable room in your house! Its your house! If they want there stuff they be quick enough getting it, if they have to pay for it!

lol 2 years free storage surely you could use the spare room for something ?? then paying for there stuff yourselves to be moved by courier and spending time organizing there stuff me thinks you care about there stuff more that they do

Careful getting the blame by asking what his problem is.

I did this last year. I asked my brother why he wasn't talking to us at home. Well he fcked a whole load of abuse over the phone at me. Somehow it was my fault ?? He was ringing everyone else including the neighbours.

No problem using me for money while he was at home....and never payed it back. .... Call me every name under the sun asshole brother....but I sold half his ****. Made a nice profit on ebay.

So op how did you calculate that it would cost them 4k?

Not really surprising from that kind of person to be honest.

I have a brother who moved to Australia a little under a decade ago and makes **** all effort to stay in touch and there's a bunch of his stuff still in my parents house that he keeps on ****eing on about moving over. I couldn't care less if I ever see or hear from him again but I know it bothers my parents.

It is a trait that I find with a lot of people who move to another country. The people they leave behind are used as someone to dump the crap they leave behind with.

    Spare room my arse.

You should have been using that room as an exercise studio, for yoga and stretches, and/or as an office, not for storing all their Shiite.
