    Its not a new website thing but its certainly becoming de rigueur on most news driven online outlets lately. Why are websites doing this?

    Surely, if you own a site, the point is to keep a user engaged with your own website and not send them off elsewhere?

    Do you find yourself clicking on ""More stories from around the web"?

    It's a way to fake viewing numbers; routing protocols are designed so that a click on the ads causes a re-direct loop and boosts the stats of any website that's signed up to the scam.

    But the links send you off to other sites, not redirected to the one you're on :confused:

    When it redirects you it also boosts the stats of the site you're on already.

    I suppose there's a sort of logic that if a (news) website regularly posts links to other interesting stories, you're more likely to keep visiting that website. You're probably not going to just google the keywords that would bring up the weird and wonderful "Bilton hat"-like stories! :)

    What annoys me, though is a chunk of screen space given over to "Most popular/Most read/Most shared" The BBC is the worst - some of their top-ranking stories are years out of date, and I'm sure that soon as you click on the link you're added to the "most read" stats.
