Congratulations BBC, for wiping out the most iconic footage of the 20th. century

    Cultural Vanadalism

I know tape was expensive, but they kept every recording of the bloody London Lord Mayors Show. A blight on the BBC's great legacy.

I'd like to have heard Bowie having a go at It's Only Rock n Roll ...

There's a poor recording of him singing a bit of it live here

There's Donovan. He was brilliant on the Saturday Night Show a while back.

I wish he would come back.

This is quite a nice collection of performances, according to this page it hasn't been on since last July, I could have sworn I have seen it recently

This was definitely on a while ago.

    Definitely.

    A few times, at that.

    God, I love Laura Marling's voice. She's like a modern-day Sandy Denny.

Got the streaming yoke working at last. Like a bleedin addict!

Bloody stones better be good now.

Do Biffy Clyro specialise in lullabyes or something?

Or is it that stupid drunk student emotional b*llocks?

Not the biggest Stones fan ever, but this is cool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

I'll have a look at the Rolling Stones tomorrow. Looks decent enough.

Quite decent film on BBC2 on Saturday Night

11.45pm Telstar: The Joe Meek Story
Biopic of the influential 1960s record producer who became a success with a string of number-one hits, including the multi-million-selling Telstar, but was ultimately brought down by depression and paranoia as his volatile personality drove away those closest to him. With Con O'Neill, Kevin Spacey, Pam Ferris and JJ Feild

I was thinking I need to give this film a better review - "quite decent" is not going to make it onto film posters alongside Paul Ross of the News of The Wrld :P

It is an intriguing account of an influential and groundbreaking music pioneer. He is largely forgotten now but Joe Meek was at the cutting edge of pop music, he was a master of his craft but he ultimately fell victim to his demons.

It's a patchy film but there is lots to like, well worth a look or a record.

Sad and dramatic end. He had been offered a job as head of production bt EMI but couldn't take it: he was being blackmailed; was being sued for back royalties, his car had just been stolen; he'd been arrested for importuning in a toilet; was questioned after an acquaintance was found dismembered in a hedge and it all, somehow, got too much for him.

    Q. How do you turn a Duck into a Soul Singer?

    A.
You hold it under a tap until it's Bill Withers. Bill will be on BBC4 at 1.10am

    Thanks Skid X.
Full of repeats unfortunately. The OGWT Gold I've seen a few times. Some good stuff on that.

Looks like it's Ovaltines and a good book weekend for me.

    Nice one Skid.

Repeats, sure, but enough there to be interesting.

Haven't listened to much Elvis lately. Looking forward to that and the extra big OGWT.

Prefer 'The Soft Parade' to 'LA Woman' - only because of 'Touch Me'...quality record!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

I love it when they play you the original master tapes in the studio, and you can hear the pure music as it was played.

They do it on the 'Classic Albums' show too.

That's my favourite Doors tune for definite, although I'm not a huge fan.

One of the great moments in Back To The Future, Marty does Johnny B Goode on stage at the Famous Undersea Dance.

I knew the story of the 13 year old bride, but looking now at the contemporary film of her it's just .... wow. Wrong.

Jerry Lee Lewis made a bizarre appearance on the RTE Gameshow 'The Lyrics Board'

    0006531a-550.jpg

    Good article about it here

    http://www.rte.ie/tv50/essays/johnkeogh.html
“Miraculously, we managed to get Jerry Lee Lewis. He was living in Ireland at the time and had rented a house not far from RTÉ in Foxrock. The producers said: ‘If he’s living here, let’s give it a try.’ We weren’t terribly hopeful but he came in to do the programme.

“From the moment he arrived he wasn’t quite sure. He was on medication at that time and he could be a bit vague as to where he was or what he was doing. Eventually I got him at the piano but the problem was I couldn’t get him to understand the rules of the game. He purely thought he was there to provide music. He didn’t realise he was part of a quiz. This was when the fun started because every time a song would come up he’d say: ‘I think I know that song.’ And he’d start to play. I’d say: ‘No, it’s not our turn. It’s the other team’s turn.’

The Lyrics Board was bizarre anyway, that would just have fitted right in.
