Just got a letter from UPC saying that I can now use free Wi-Fi from other (participating) UPC subscriber modems when away from my house.

The SSID will be 'Horizon Wi-Free' and you have to set a special password for the service on http://www.upc.ie/myupc under My Products/Broadband/Horizon Wi-Free. Note that the password must include at least one special (non-alphanumeric) character and be at least 8 characters long.

Take note that you cannot connect to your own box's Wi-Free with your userid and password so when it's activated on your horizon box, you will need to get a friend who has opted in and is a Horizon subscriber to check it with their userid and password.

I didn't think you were allowed get a password for Wi-Free until it was activated on your own box?? I opted in a while back but wasn't aware it needed a new password until they sent me the letter.

Anyway, I'm off now to buy some fruit & veg. and I'll electronically stalk my neighbours to see if I can pick up a signal between here and the greengrocers!
