Not surprised. It's an SE with rep wheels, NCT out next month, no mention of tax, damage over the rear passenger arch, no mention of service history, and the owner hasn't a clue.

Apparently the mechanic brought it home to bring it to another office for 730 the next morning.

While appreciate that is early in some peoples world, to drive 10km home to drive 20km to the garage the next morning when it would be no major detour to have picked it up early in the morning I'm not really happy about.

As I thought it was staying put in the garage in the first place.

As was the impression I was given when I made the enquiry in the first place!

I don't know how mechanics work when it comes to taking peoples' cars but when I detail or even valet a customer's car, I often bring it for a drive after washing in order to get all the water out of the cracks. I always make the customer aware that I need to do this. It's only a short spin less than 1km but it still needs to be said and if they had a problem with it, I'd obviously not do it.

IMO, you have every right to know where your car is and why it was used if at all. You also have the right to not have a mechanic/detailer etc. use it for their own purposes.

If it saved your mechanic time by bringing it home that evening then I wouldn't mind BUT if you asked would he be driving it and he said no, then went and drove it then I'd be pissed.
