Hi there, thanks for your query. Possible causes can include ... electrical systems, fuel systems, mechanical friction...

To date there has been no manufacturing defect

So Opel didn't manufacture the electrical systems, fuel systems, or any moving parts while making the car then. Good to know.

On the very old n2 after the texaco / car wash there is a speed camera.

Is that speed camera still in action ?

Bush growing in front of it !

Anyone here know a good mechanic in Athlone?
I recently moved and don't know any myself.
Preferrably one that can do emmision tests.

Is that every credit union or just Newbridge?

Also back from NCT re-test and failed on Lambda reading. The dipetine brought down the emissions but not by much so it's not a miracle worker or anything which was kinda to be expected. I drove in 3rd gear for half and hour on the M6 at 100km/h, revs were at 4,500rpm, it felt weird even driving at that speed I was still over taking some drivers, mostly trucks.

But back to the Lambda reading, I should have spotted it was high the first time and thought there was something up but didn't seems obvious now. I could change the lambda and run it through again but I don't think I will I will have to go to the professionals(mechanic).

Was it only the lambda it failed on? What was it?

Lambda: 1.19 fail not between 0.97 and 1.03 so it was well off.
CO 0.30 vol% above 0.30% fail so it just passed this by skin of it's teeth.

The first test I failed CO 0.32% so the dipetane brought it down to passing levels. It didn't bring it down much mind you so I was lucky it only just barely failed the first time.

You know how they only test what you failed on will they do the CO test again as I don't want to waste another €12 on bottle of dipetine.

I told you not to put the whole thing in! :pac:

I say you've a hole in your exhaust with that lambda. Any decent mechanic should be able to tell that with his ears.

CO is still a bit borderline. Could be the whole in the exhaust causing it but other things to do for that are diagnostics scan, full service, check PCV valves and hoses. I normally use an injector cleaner first like stp fuel system cleaner or lucas do a decent one, run the tank to near the empty light and then use dipetane in the correct mixture for the test itself.

I don't think there is a hole in exhaust. Doesn't sound like it anyway even today while doing 100km/h in 3rd it wasn't loud.

I think I done enough guesswork and I will have to go to mechanic. So if anybody knows a good mechanic in Athlone, please do tell.

With lambda that high I would guess you have an exhaust leak...

There may not be but it's usually the case. It does seem oddly high, Any way a good diagnostics session will tell you if it's a sensor at fault. Maybe PM marlow, or black knight is in athlone too, for a recomendation or try the athlone forum if there's one. May go unnoticed here.

That's a good idea about trying the Athlone forum.

On the subject of newbridge credit union I'd be doubtful if they're lending to the same lax standards that they were lending at a while ago.

On the subject of a loan for a 2k car, gvidor I wouldn't. It's a 2k car. When you buy a 2k car there's a high possibility it'll need a lot of work. If that work is enough to deem the car worthy of a home in the local scrap yard, you're down 1800, but still have a loan of 1800 on the car. While nct makes sure that the car is up to safety requirements on The day of the test it doesn't look at mechanical issues like clutch, gearbox or engine. If the head gasket was to go on your 2k car you'd be royally ****ed while still paying back a loan for many months after it was gone.

If it was me, I'd save up and continue to drive the colt. Sub 2k cars are such a big risk, that they're not worth having a loan on one.

Severe lack of decent indys around Athlone tbh. Or at least there's none I know of that I'd leave my car with.

Paid my car tax, well 3 months only as I'll get rid of it soon. Insurance up next month, and NCT the following month. I thought I'd try fit it in for an NCT next month before I sell it.... no appointments until late July!

You have to keep ringing them to get a cancelation.

I'll give that a shot once I have the car ready. Thanks!

Figured it should be easier to sell with an NCT, even a fail sheet would be better than nothing.
