Tried them. They were unable to provide an unlock code. My email requesting a refund has gone unanswered.

Anyone else success in getting a refund from them?

Just submitted a refund request via the support email, will update you if I get a response

has everyone who bought this had to give date of birth to cpw?

Ye I was curious about giving details as well. I had to give my name, address, telephone number and DOB in CPW.

OH, and I got a follow up text from them asking about my experience.

Sent two emails to that address, both went unanswered. Then contacted DalPay, they advised to contact accounts@unlock-your-phones.com. Did that early yesterday morning. No response.

Can anyone using this phone compare it to a top level Android phone?

    Hopefully won't be too bad.

CPW are a bit strange that way alright. I had to buy credit with the phone, and they opened the box and wanted to put the sim in too, but I was buying the phone as a gift, so I asked them not to do that.

Personally I have the same fake DOB which I give to every place that asks for DOB that doesn't need it.

It gives interesting results, like a company support asking for a dob as confirmation and they expect not the real one on my account but the fake one I used on their support forum. Or how did Faceache get a different DOB to the one I gave them. Which suggests if you give out subtly different information to different websites, and record what you gave, you'll be able to track who is sharing your info.

What would be the point of that.

If you want a phone to fully sync with all your google information, I would have thought a android phone would be a better choice.

I would assume he wants to make a small investment on a phone that performs well.

An Android phone in the same price bracket would be awful.

I tried these useless shower too and they couldn't give me a code. I fired off two emails & no reply . I then emailed help@unlock-your-phones.com& got a response saying they would refund.
I then got an email from The Phone Shack via PayPal (member@paypal.ie) about the refund & asking me to verify my paypal password .

I didn't pay by paypal so I phoned paypal to see what was happening & they verified my account and sure enough the refund came into paypal and I then transferred it into my bank account minus a 68c paypal charge.

I don't know why this lot refunded by paypal when I paid by card but I got my money back . I know its only 8e odd but still........

I was charged €9.49 on my card despite it saying the cost was €8.99 - anyone else get this?

Because it's only going to be a couple of weeks and I'm not bothered with syncing with Google, I'm sure I can access Gmail from a windows phone! When I'm finished with it I want a decent phone to give away.

Its light years ahead of any android phone costing around the 100 mark. The Moto G seems to be the best bang for your buck when it comes to budget Android. But for 50, there isn't anything out there to compete with it.

Must be to do with the conversion rate. I was charged in USD despite using an Irish Visa card. In my case it was charged at 9.01 on my account.

Yes, it's very easy to set up Gmail account on a Windows phone. I set up two Gmail accounts on the Lumia 521, which is almost identical to the 520. I usually use it just to check messages on the fly, but prefer to compose or reply to messages on laptop.

It would be illegal if you put it on a passport or driving licence, or maybe a mortgage.
Not if you're spending 50 euro on a phone from a commercial business, who has no right to your personal details anyway!

Regarding Window 8.1 on this, has anyone upgraded? I heard its coming to the phone in about 6 weeks anyway. Is there any point in waiting?

I think this deserves a thread of its own, I absolutely 100% agree with you on that one though. When did dob become a prerequisite to buying a mobile phone? Its getting ridiculous.

You won't get a better performing phone for the price. But its still a budget phone at the end of the day. It can't escape that. I wish the phone was better in sunlight, had a flash and DNLA, and a bigger battery.

The next phone up I'd buy would be a Moto G.

Think of it in another way.
    CPW is a business.
Say if i went and set up my own business selling cakes and muffins. Then you come in looking for a chocolate muffin one afternoon. If I said u have to give me your name, address, telephone number, and date of birth to buy that muffin, what would you think?

CPW is just another business. T's & C's are irrelevant.

Not in ireland afaik but they do in a lot of countries around the word where there is a legal requirement to register prepay sim purchases:

or if yer buying a prepay sim in some countries
An increasing number of governments have recently introduced mandatory registration of prepaid SIM card users, primarily as a tool to counter terrorism and support law enforcement efforts. However, to date there is no evidence that mandatory registration leads to a reduction in crime.

i agree with you that cpw is just a business but t and cs are contracts. if you said t and c means i had to give dob to buy a muffin i would walk but would not give a false dob. i can buy the phone with no crap for another 50 or so. i am not selling my personal data to cpw for 50 euro

I said I give a false DOB when they don't need to have it. If they make part of the TC that's different. if you're that interested, you should read the wiki and start a new thread somewhere else about it.

I'll echo this: I miss the camera flash and the front cam (especially the latter) and the battery and screen could be better but I'm very happy with what I got for €50. The only lag I've noticed is with the stock keyboard - I can't wait for the swype version for this as I prefer that method - and it has enough apps to cover me after my move from Android. The apps themselves could do with a bit of work (eBay is a bit messy) but a lot of the basics are there.

I've seen this compared to the Moto G but I find it unfair as the Moto G is almost 4 times the price realistically (£140 = €170 for the 16gb from tesco.co.uk as the 8gb isn't worth it, €4 for parcel motel and €5 for unlocking it on eBay) when you get the Lumia for €50.

No real point in waiting. Updating takes 5 mins of actual work and maybe an hour to an hour and a half for the (two) updates to download and install.

Well worth taking the time to do it. The actual official roll out will take ages to spread to all devices, it depends on OEMs and carriers adding their own **** to the firmware.

Any other bits they do thrown in can be updated on top of the raw preview build when they release
