Could struggle to score enough. Be interesting to see how they price up their game with Armagh in Armagh.

They need Martin Dunne on form but he's very hit and miss.

You can get 11/10 on a Cavan win, I think they'll beat Armagh anyway. Cavan beat them last year in the Championship and are definitely improving a lot and have a good young team. Armagh got relegated from division 2. As you say though Cavan's main problem is scoring, they have a very good well organised defence. They only conceded 1 goal in 7 games in the league(then a couple in the final).

Pretty sure Michael foley won an all star a few years ago without Kildare featuring to much bar being beat by the dubs in a Leinster final.

Yep, he did. Way I look at it there's less and less natural defenders who actually want to mind the house. Take johnny cooper for example, may start corner back but never stops bombing forward.

Brian Lohan got an All Star in 1996 after playing one game for Clare

Ger Cushe really deserved full back that year

Sorry probably not in the spirit of the discussion, I just took the opportunity to get in a moan!

As for my own county I can only see a disappointing campaign. A hammering by Dublin in the semis but hopefully a decent enough showing in the qualifiers. Defence for Kildare is a big problem, they leak far too many goals.

Keating's ball winning is the key for Dunne. Only problem is consistency with him too. In fairness to Armagh, they'd awful injuries during the league and may be without Aaron Kernan now too. They've nothing to lose too. Cavan stop Jamie Clarke from goaling and they'll probably get through though they've a few injuries now too

Yeah Kernan is a huge loss. The way Cavan play I think will see them do well in Ulster this year but it's wide open! Personally looking forward to Ulster the most.

We needed a change but not sure if it's been for the better! We had a woeful league campaign. We have one of the best young players in the country in Brophy but defence is woeful. Dublin will slaughter us. All you have to do is run at this Kildare defence and they shit themselves.

Can be overly defensive stuff at times but at least it's competitive! The rest aren't worth watching! The Dublin and Mayo training games being the worst!

Coral are money back (as a free bet) on World Cup outright bets if Brazil or Argentina win (they're less than 6/4 coupled)

    Max refund £/€25

Sweet thanks for this, be shocked if Uruguay don't win it anyway.

I think Uruguay are an ageing squad, think it's Spain's again. Too much quality even the youthful lads have real class.

Yeah I think 4/6 to win their group is a big price but don't think they will win it, probably reach the quarters.
Portugal could be dark-horses with Ronaldo in flying form. They seem to play their best at big tournaments and have been unlucky to run into Spain the last 2 majors

How much credibility are people putting on the fact that a European team has never won a South American World Cup?

I've 125/1 Colombia which was looking a tasty docket to hold until Falcao got crocked

I would think it holds a fairly significant edge. The fans are absolute nutters down there and they make it ridiculously hard. I think on paper Spain look the best team but I would struggle to have any confidence in any team that isn't Brazil tbh. That being said it's hard to pull the trigger on any of the top 4 at the prices. The bookies aren't really taking any chances.

A lot. Not at computer but I bet if you looked up host teams/neighbouring countries of this and the euro's in past tourneys, they have a good record. Brazil or Agentina are worthy favs and the most likely winners IMO.

Just looking at the market there I wonder do bookies see much cash in the way of the likes of Russia at 100/1 or even equador at 150/1. Jesus you'd love to take them bets all day long. Or well any team outside the top 10 really!!

I know it's a cup format but really 75% of the teams haven't an earthly hope.

Spain will be my bet for WC @ 7/1. Obviously the likes of Xavi are getting on but they've good young midfielders as backup, a proven manager who wont be afraid to make changes and the best strikeforce (bar Torres) they've ever had. Having a Brazilian up front should be helpful too and i'd be interested in Costa for top goalscorer @ 25/1. The provisional squad they've just announced is ridiculous in strength and depth:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Napoli), David De Gea (Manchester United).

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos (both Real Madrid), Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba (both Barcelona), Cesar Azplicueta (Chelsea), Juanfran (Atletico Madrid), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich), Raul Albiol (Napoli), Alberto Moreno (Sevilla).

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas (all Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Ander Iturraspe (Athletic Bilbao), David Silva (Manchester City), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Tiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich), Juan Mata (Manchester United), Jesus Navas (Manchester City).

Forwards: Diego Costa, David Villa (both Atletico Madrid), Alvaro Negredo (Manchester City), Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Fernando Llorente (Juventus), Fernando Torres (Chelsea).

Is Isco injured? Strength in depth is unbelievable, definitely value at 7s considering they're going for 4 consecutive majors and I think Brazil left a few quality players out in Lucas Moura, Coutinho, Alex, Marquinhos,Kaka, Miranda and Felipe.

    World Cup Stats

    Year
HostWinner1930 Uruguay Uruguay1934 Italy Italy1938 France Italy1942Cancelled due to World War II1946Cancelled due to World War II1950 Brazil Uruguay1954 Switzerland West Germany1958 Sweden Brazil1962 Chile Brazil1966 England England1970 Mexico Brazil1974 West Germany West Germany1978 Argentina Argentina1982 Spain Italy1986 Mexico Argentina1990 Italy West Germany1994 United States Brazil1998 France France2002 South Korea / Japan Brazil2006 Germany Italy2010 South Africa Spain

Hosts seem to do well. And even if the host doesn't do well, a neighbour often lifts the trophy unless the competition is held where neighbouring countries don't rank highly (south korea & south africa hosting).
