Saw The Conjuring in the cinema, my god, that top of the wardrobe scene literally made me scream like a little girl. I was traumatised for days.

Also, Sinister was pretty creepy. Also saw this in the cinema and the lawnmower scene made me scream like a little girl once again.

First hour or so of Insidious were scary, until the "further" **** came into it. Also, my first name is Dalton, so that added a bit to it :pac:

Might get laughed at for this but the first time I watched Candyman I was scared witless, the 2nd one is good too, they ruined it with the third.

defo Rosemarys baby, heard they are doing a Tv series on this?

First time I seen Blair Witch also left me with chills especially the end.

All the classics mentioned and rightly so. We are still recommending them after all these years for a reason.

That said, Rosemary's Baby is just a quality film from start to finish and would be my first choice off the top of my head.

A TV series you could check out is CARNIVAL. Not sure what genre it is but it's quite different and was very enjoyable to watch something that wasn't as prescribed as the usual muck.

I liked The Hunger, though find it very hard to find others that do.
The Lair Of The White Worm wasn't as bad as made out either.

Favourite is definitely the original The Wicker Man though.

Speaking of jump scares in cinema
I don't think I ever jumped as high in the cinema when he let out that "ARRRRRGHHH!!!!" and the distant thunder rumble of the theme tune starts to tune in, it was so loud and utterly frightening in such a peaceful setting
, and the whole tone changes like BANG. I still jump to this day, even though I know when it's coming, yet I feel uneasy waiting for it. It's not even a horror movie!

    Best ending ever.

Ooh, such a tough question - I love horror. Although, it's a tough genre to define. Supernatural, Gore, Zombie, psychological etc..

My favourite horror film is probably An American Werewolf in London, closely followed by Creepshow, the Fog, Psycho, The Shining, Rosemary's Baby, The Others and 28 Days Later.

I could pick at least a dozen others, though!

Hostel series, house of 1000 corpses and it's sequel devils rejects are gruesome, but if you want gore it's a winner.

Human centipede ... 2 not 1, one is ****e ... Pun kinda intended. 2 is creepy as feck as well as disgustingly stomach churning.

One I intent to watch but havnt yet is martyrs ... Might be a bit too much for a lot of people.

A Serbian film ... Left me with a bad feeling In my stomach for days afters. Very extreme

Was basically just about to post tho, though the original Human Centipede is great too.

Add Wrong Turn series to that and for God's sake avoid Hostel 3.

The Descent - six ladies go caving (spelunking?) and if the claustrophobia doesn't get you, what they find down there definitely will.

The Ring - the American version is all the best bits of the first two Japanese ones combined. Watch a creepy video and, in seven days, you die. Nb. Never never watch The Ring 2, it's frighteningly terrible, and not in a good way.

REC - news crew follow a group of firemen around Barcelona for the night. They get a call to go to an apartment block where some of the inhabitants have started to act a little *strangely*. I like how frantic the characters sound speaking Spanish when they are just talking about their dinner, etc. and how this really amps up when things start to go horribly monstrous.

Les Diaboliques - the wife and mistress of a school's headmaster plot to murder him and make it appear that he drowned in the school swimming pool. All goes well until the pool is emptied and he ain't in there.

The Haunting - great spooky tension build up in a big haunted house. The nineties remake is terrible, by the way.

Nosferatu - nearly a hundred years old, but still setting a high bar for atmospheric creepiness. How did they get such a scary looking fellow to be the vampire? Watch the wonderful Shadow of the Vampire for an entertaining explanation.

    Conjuring is a good one.

Also both Wolf Creek films, kinda low budget but very good.

    Oh and Hostel 1, 2 & 3 :)

    Eden Lake was amazing.

I really don't enjoy torture films, I find them too much. I nearly walked out of Hostel 2 during the bath scene. Nearly got sick at that scene! I also don't like Saw, Hostel, I find them hard to handle!

Eden Lake, Wolf Creek and Funny Games (remake) I did love though. They'd be considered somewhat torture-involving, I suppose!
So long ago since I watched all 3 Hostel films, I'm trying to remember what the bath scene was...

Yeah Wolf Creek is definitely a torture film, [Kind of a spoiler] when the guy gets his fingers angle grinded off... Bleh!

The original Salems Lot still gives me the creeps today--that **** remake in 2002 was terrible.

The Saw movies were really good but I more of a slasher movie type person--Freddie,Jason,Michael Myers etc....you just cant beat them.

Not a huge fan of the torture stuff or this "found footage" ****e.

    Little Nicky.

Only kidding, not into horror films. Certainly wouldn't be arsed paying to see one.

I thought Sinister was great. The ending could have been better though!
I am not a fan of gore, I find it boring. Not scary in the slightest.

I'm amazed to see Martyrs so well recommended in this thread. It's an amazing movie, but really hard to watch, very bleak.

The Thing (1982), The Omen (original), Psycho, The Hills have Eyes, Alien, Aliens,Saw, does Se7en count? I suppose it'd be more of a thriller really

It should be good but in reality it's terrible.

They've tried to turn it into an awful teen drama with the occasional reference to there possibly being something a bit weird with Norman.

Vera Farmiga is nice to look at though.

Older ones: the devil rides out, night of the demon

Newer ones: the ring (Japanese version), alien, event horizon, angel heart

Special mention: the masque of the red death (not necessarily scary just a very underrated movie), from a whisper to a scream

All very different to each other but great movies (IMHO). Some wouldn't class everything there as horror but I would!

I loved Carnival, really pi*sed me off that they aren't making any more. It was unique. I love the American Horror Story series and there's rumours that the next series will be set around either a circus or a carnival, either would be great.
