What are your favourite horror films?

I'm going through a horror phase at the moment and I need suggestions.

What are your favourite horror films?

Even a good horror tv series (besides American Horror Story and Salem as I'm already watching those) would help!

Not sure if it's a horror or just gruesome, but jeepers creepers always gave me the....... jeepers? :pac: Seen it about 5 years ago, and it scared the crap out of me, haven't seen it since. Forget what it's about exactly at this stage....

Terminator (1984), it's a horror film, L.A has never looked so grubby and post apocalptic in the present

Shaun of the Dead is damn scary in parts, possibly because it feels so real and witty in the same amount and all at the one time, and there's a tension running through the whole thing.

Day of the dead is very good.

I thought both Thing movies were great (2011 and 1982). Alien of course. Cloverfield is good too (although the cinema version was incredibly visceral)

The Exorcist, Christine, Halloween, The Shining and The Omen.. would be my top five.

From recent years, I liked Drag Me To Hell.

Psycho and Rosemary's baby are up there. When I was younger I thought Blair Witch Movie was terrifying. Marketing campaign for that was very clever and effective.

Of the last few years, The Conjuring, genuinely freaked me out.

I remember sneaking in to see that when I was 15 (it was an 18s.) I thought it was really good. I've watched it a few times since.

Sorry, I knew I'd get picked up on this for not clarifying!

What I meant was, it'd probably lose some of the visceral impact when it's watched on the small screen. I was actually dizzy at the viewing at one point and I loved it.

My brother is constantly "will they ever make a sequel to that?"

I really enjoyed Sinister. The last 15-20 mins were pretty meh but it was good otherwise.

Hostel series, house of 1000 corpses and it's sequel devils rejects are gruesome, but if you want gore it's a winner.

Human centipede ... 2 not 1, one is ****e ... Pun kinda intended. 2 is creepy as feck as well as disgustingly stomach churning.

One I intent to watch but havnt yet is martyrs ... Might be a bit too much for a lot of people.

A Serbian film ... Left me with a bad feeling In my stomach for days afters. Very extreme

The remake of the Amityville Horror was really good. REC was the first film in years to actually make me scream with the fright. Fantastic watch if you don't mind subtitles.

Yeah I've found it felt flat too, similar to how Sinister and Insidous ended up.

I usually steer clear of those horrific films but anything I heard about that film seemed really interesting and I kinda wanted to have the stomach to watch it. Then it was on the Horror channel one night so I watched it... with trepidation. Had to keep changing channels though, and I wasn't able for the ending. It's very good, but... beyond terrifying. Not for everyone.

I'd fully agree, I'm a fan of gory horrors, but I hate creature horrors or paranormal horrors ... It's strange haha, the ring gave me nightmares yet I watched devils rejects and cannibal holocost no problem.

The psychological ones are the best, why I recommend Eden lake ... Didn't even know it was a horror until I watched and the gore commenced it made me feel weak afterwards and very sad.

Martrs .... Steer clean if you can't handle it ... Same with a Serbian film.

I really don't enjoy torture films, I find them too much. I nearly walked out of Hostel 2 during the bath scene. Nearly got sick at that scene! I also don't like Saw, Hostel, I find them hard to handle!

Eden Lake, Wolf Creek and Funny Games (remake) I did love though. They'd be considered somewhat torture-involving, I suppose!

I'd say you'd find Martyrs excellent. And it's not gore for gore's sake - there is a very good thriller/mystery storyline.
I wouldn't be able for The Human Centipede or A Serbian Film though - I've read up on them, but that's enough! :eek:

The Thing (1982 version), a great psychological horror movie. I wouldn't be into any of the more recent horror movies.

Martyrs is the only gore film that made it into Time's top 100 horror films. I haven't seen it myself though.

Glad someone else knows Eden lake, I tell people about it and they're like "what?" It's not as prolific.

Ironically hostel, saw and the likes are very tamed,especially compared to house of 1000 corpses, devils rejects, some more obscure gore feste, there's a film called "would you rather" and of course the guinea pig series that is just too much.

Found funny games boring, it was psychological alright which is great when you want your mind to be challenged, but I found it slow paced.

Martyrs will stay with me forever, the amount of pure psychological and emotional torture put in us as the viewer never mind everything else ... It's heavy, heavy stuff.

Human centipede is coming out with the third installment still waiting in the release, no 2 is a sick fest ... They just went mad.

A Serbian film, hard to get an uncut version, I found it a bit confusing but then realised it's meant to shock and not to make you think, awfully sad. Uncut was a lot to handle especially a few certain scenes, I had to look away during one specific scene which I won't go into detail.

I love the more subtle kind of film, rather than in-your-face-horror, however, I will 2nd The Thing (because it is awesome).

I thought Lake Mungo was terrifying and deeply disturbing.

Black Christmas was pretty much the first in its genre but amazingly good nonetheless.

The Changeling is very scary and sad. (But excellent)

The Haunting (1963) is another favorite.

Noroi is excellent too

Session 9 isn't exactly a classic but it is a solid film, as is most of Pontypool

Horrors are **** once you grow up, its gore for the sake of gore.

saying that when i was a kid Salems lot scared teh **** out of me, the kid scratching the window.

nowadays horror only works on kids.

Event Horizon probably not that scary to most but it scared the bejinkers out of me. Sam Neil and Laurance Fishburn star in it if I remember correctly.

Gore is only one sub-genre of horror though.

And horror also works on a lot of adults!
