Strange flock of birds around lake

Would anybody be able to give any sort of possible ID on a group of 10-15 birds, dark brown, flying slowly in V formation over land /hills near a lake, then they dipped all of a sudden towards ground near lake shore. Possibly a curved beak.

Similar to a curlew in body size, the call didn't sound like anything to what I've heard before. I last seen them flying around the lake near our house on Tuesday.

Possibly migrating Whimbrel - they appear to be turning up everywhere these days ! May have been different flocks on both days - are you near the coast ? Have had them here too and I'm midlands based . Description you give says whimbrel to me anyway !

I follow that normally as I do bird watch around here, I am south leitrim, quite a bit from the coast.

The first day I was on horseback so couldn't stop to count (well, horse didn't want to stop and count!)

In the exact same area today, seemed to be a similar size of flock. I'm normally adept at recognising birds too. Would t be usual to see them inland?

See them regular on the Shannon this time of year, so presume their a common enough site inland during the summer months!
