TUS Programme

I'm just about to finish up my placement this week. When I first heard about the programme and what most of the jobs on it entailed I was completely put off. I went in and told them my experience and skills, what sort of job I was looking for and that I would only take a position that was relevant to my experience or any job that I'd be doing in future. They're pretty accommodating if you can present them with a good argument for not street sweeping, grass cutting or the like.

While my position is not exactly relevant to the type of job I want it has built certain skills that will actually be useful in the future rather than random ****e I'll never use again

Well done on being so proactive! You have nothing to lose by having a vision of what you can bring to the scheme and presenting that at interview stage. I had a very blinkered view of CE schemes until I went on one a few years ago. I found it very rewarding and made some great friends. It took me in a different direction to where I felt I wanted to go and am now happily employed, using skills learned on the scheme.

For anyone called up for this in the Dublin area and are interested in computers there's a place in Chapelizod who refurbish old pc's for charity called Camara.....I know someone who did the 12 months there and found it very reasonable

Just a quick FYI for new Tus participants. If you do happen to like your placement you can ask your Tus supervisor to apply for a second year with your employer. I only found this out last week so was too late to apply but it might be handy for others to tide you over until you find something permanent. Ultimately, I wouldn't go for it myself as I think I would just be delaying the inevitable of ending up back on the dole but I would have liked to know about it before it was too late

    the Gov sites states

When the placement finishes, they should sign on again with their local social welfare office. They cannot participate in the Tús scheme again for 3 years.

who told you someone could do an other year, not that i can see anyone wanting to

How long after interview do u get a place? And can u work week on and the off week off do 3hrs.one week?

depend on your location you cold placed in few days to few months to never.

as far as the hours go , you can arrange it between yourself and the place your placed.

you got 52*19.5 hours to cover over 12 months, so if the placed you get allows it you can work week on week off by working 39 hours weeks

You may have the option of staying a further year with the Host Organisation if they have a CE placement. However this would have to applied for via Intreo. There is no 2nd year on Tús.

A family member got a letter about the TUS scheme this week, he did a JobBridge that finished at the start of February and was not kept on, he found it strange that barely 3 months later they were trying to get him to do another scheme, anyway he does not drive and the buses around the area are very hit and miss, could he refuse on these grounds if they offer him a placement outside of the town.

I see people here have stood their ground about being placed in a job that is not suited to their skills, he has a good degree, but nowhere in the county would be able to cater for his skills. He also has been actively looking for work abroad and has an offer of private work if he sets up his own company, would this be a good enough reason for him to say he does not want to be interviewed for the scheme or will they just cut his money.

If he wants to start up his own company, he may be eligable for the back to work allowance that lets him keep his dole for a time. Tell them his plans and seek their help in setting up on his own - if that is the route he wishes to travel.

Im afraid its all about figures,

Whilst doing Jobsbridge they were taken of the live register and shown as someone back in employment, leaving Jobsbridge shows them back on the Live register, in order to adjust the figures again they now want them on TUS which also isn't included on the live register.

Its simple figure adjusting, and im afraid your family member is just a stat.

I got a Letter to send back, the usual, threats to be cut if I don't oblige, there was just a couple of Yes / No questions on the Letter am I available for Interview etc. People here are mentionning about Forms, I didn't get any Form, do they give ya a Form to fill out about yourself when you go for Interview? Also, the Letter is from Tús I think, and it seems people here got Interviewed or had informal chats whatever with Tús themselves, but Letter seems to suggest I will be interviewed by / put forward for / hired by a different Company / Organization, - not Tús, so it looks like Tús have just already sent me onto other place. They'd kinda want to tell me whats going on, I don't really know whether I definitely have a Placement which is what it sounds like as they've named the Company, or if it's just a start to paperwork with more Forms to follow to set me up on the Tús Database / System like what they do with L.E.S. stuff.:rolleyes: I suppose I'll probably get a Letter in the Postbox now Tuesday Morning to start in such and such a place Wednesday morning.:rolleyes: So fricking vague, would be nice to kinda know what's happening. :)

I got one letter from welfare regarding tus, the one telling you to take part or else.

few weeks later the local body that runs the scheme sent a letter with date and time for the chat/ interview.

at the interview they gave the forums to fill out. some people apparently got them with the letter with chat/interview date and time.

before you can start a placement you get some paperwork that you, tus and welfare fill out, whole process takes about 2 weeks

I thought that TUS was only for charity work, but not for 'profit businesses' ? Alsaa sports and fitness association at Dublin airport have TUS workers and they are a for profit business. Is this correct ? or did they change this.

It says... So long as you are a community, voluntary and not for profit organisation.

If every member in Alsaa has to pay a years membership, then isn't that a for profit organisation ?.

I thought that too, but golfclubs and other such places are taking people via Tus, where the Tus people are the only people there not being paid.

I have never heard of golf-clubs taking on folk from TUS. If that is the case then it is illegal as it breaks the rules in regards to their eligibility. It has to be non-profit organisations only that can participate in TUS, I just read it there on their own website. Has anyone reported these places ?.

I doubt they care, can you have a non profit golfclub?

Yeah it is a very badly worded letter this i have never ever in my life received a letter that sugests i would not reply to it ! Statment of which is highlighted on the first page with its own paragraph you turn it over then and they say they will take you off if you do reply ! Meanwhile they provide really very little or no information of what tus actually is or about except that they want me to travel to Ballyfermot of all places when i dont even live in Co Dublin !

They have thrown me off now because i was late to repy the last time i was thrown off in Dublin i was told i could be polish or lithuanian or something and spent the next two and half years to three years iveing in this country with a zero income so i really dont think they are funny at this stage.

How can you show you've been genuinely seeking work if you've no CV? Asking for trouble there, matey! Play along and you never know, you just might enjoy the experience.

You're doing exceptionally well dv. 2 posts, both crap. That's a 100% strike rate.

If you've nothing to add to this thread, why don't you just bugger off ?

An update on my family member that got the TUS letter, he was told by one social welfare employee that he could work privately and not have his claim affected, so he said he was not interested participating in the scheme as he was starting a new job later this month and sent the letter back. He goes into the welfare office a few days ago and he gets told by a different staff member that it was not possible to work without a huge hit to his payment unless he came back with a 3 year business plan and such, so he is not able to take the job now.

He is now afraid that he could get his payment cut for saying he was starting a new job and now not being able to take it, will they be in contact with him again about the scheme and will they understand that at the time he sent the letter back he did have a job offer, the employer is willing to write a letter on official letterhead stating this was the case if he needs it.

I'm in the process of getting aboard the Tus scheme, I've been unemployed since 2011, I've applied for so many jobs , I'm now gonna be a tutor of some sort for Adults in computers , is this going to benefit me? That's actually irrelevant at this stage as sitting at home doing nothing certainly won't, I can't understand people who moan about " Working for nothing" it's not working for nothing, you're getting a wage of €208 a week and more importantly getting out of the house and actually helping people. Anybody with any dignity will jump at this oppertunity because I certainly am,looking forward to the daily routine , it's been a while!

Thanks folks, Yes Dan Ive heard it's a good way back into the land of the living lol , I worked for 7 Years , not a great job but still kept me sane,it's when you're sitting at home you realise working is not all about money, it's about getting up early , brushing your teeth, doing your job then returning home and feeling a self worth , I've been feeling pretty useless of late but getting that letter has lifted my spirits. I start next month, will keep yas updated on to what to expect for people who ate considering getting on board :)

    Hi Ken,

That's the attitude I adopted when I began the scheme last year - I'm now employed by the company. I'm not saying you are guaranteed a job at the end of it but it is a great opportunity to fill a gap on your CV and perhaps learn new skills. And nobody is "working for nothing" you get a part time wage and your dignity back, which is priceless

Good Luck. Make the most of it. I hate when people knock something they've never tried. Having done a CE scheme, I can only see the positives. Like you I just started with wanting something to get me out of the house. I've made some fantastic friends and had my eyes opened to different lifestyles and worked with people with physical and mental health difficulties. They were the ones I learned most from!
