Because the Kelleher/Shelbourne Developments is a much better idea...
We'll get our Santiago Calatrava-designed stadium eventually. You'll see.

    Exist vs not exist.

    Tough one isnt it.

And yes seems to be working out quite well for us and the FAI.

It was mutual going by Mick Cooke's statement. I don't think it mattered much really, I honestly can't see Athlone even making this season respectable.

Mahon wanted more money so they went with Long.

might as well build for next season and try to get a good few of the young lads some great experience.

To be fair, they've lost most of their games by the odd goal - they've just not been getting the breaks.

That said, they were awful against Pats.

I noticed from last night soccer republic that neither Athlone nor Limerick have sponsors on their jerseys. Any news or rumours about them getting one soon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭Vision of Disorder

There's been rumours that we (Limerick) have had one in the works since the season started. I don't know any more than that.

Pats hardly interested in buying the whole site are they? It's far too big. DCC don't know whether they're coming or going with that piece of land; they seem to have a different idea on what to do with it every week. Can't see them buying Richmond for housing though; apparently they don't want any more social housing in Inchicore.

Came across a fairly random article today concerning the demise of various LOI clubs and re-starts of others. It's from a few years ago I think as no mention on Monaghan FC or Galway United going under. Posted it in the 'Interesting Articles' thread.

Things don't seem to be rosy in Blaa Land. Waterford United rumoured to be releasing players and there's supposed to be a meeting today between management and players.

Will a B team have to replace the Blaa team? Sorry.

Waterford Utd weren't far off promotion to the premier some seasons back. It's a shame to see them struggling. Cobh had the A championship for a few seasons to sort themselves out.

from extratime full statement in the link
Waterford United have tonight released a statement following rumours that a number of players had been released from the club with a reduced wage package being offered to the rest of the playing staff.

The statement confirms that a meeting took place today but only stated that a possible reduction in squad numbers and a change of terms and conditions were on the cards due to the difficult economic circumstances the club has found itself in.

they had posted earlier that 6 players were being released and wage reduction for the rest of the team. looks like thats confirmed now
never something you want to see

... Cobh had the A championship for a few seasons to sort themselves out.

Pretty sure players took to twitter a while back complaining that they weren't being paid so not sure if they sorted themselves out at all

Waterford United Club Statement 04/05/14 May 4th, 2014
    Waterford United FC

    Press Release

Waterford United confirms that a meeting was held today, Sunday May 4th, with players and coaching staff to discuss reducing the day-to-day costs of running the club.

Due to current economic circumstances, the club has been unable to attract sufficient financial support through sponsorship or gate receipts, to meet the current cost of the League of Ireland squad. This has resulted in a deficit beginning to appear in the club’s finances.

Areas under discussion at the meeting included the possible reduction in squad numbers and changes to terms and conditions of players and staff.

Proposals are currently being considered by the players and staff and a further meeting is due to take place later in the week. A final decision on the best way forward will not be made until after this meeting.

    - John O’Sullivan, Chairman.

Nine games into the season and the club realise they don't have the funds to pay staff? So how the hell did they manage to get a licence?

It's almost as though licensing is a complete and utter sham isn't it?

He mentions attendances and sponsorship. They've averaged 600 so far this season so far (compared to 478 last year) so crowds are up. And given the situation with Monaghan going to the wall when a sponsor pulled out surely clubs aren't allowed to apply for licenses on sponsorship deals that aren't nailed down?

Of course they could just be spending more than they should too...

That wasn't wages not being paid, it was players complaining about the club being completely amatuer. They all left anyway and their squad is entirely made up of u21s now.

The first division should have merged with the A championship a few years back. Established clubs should have been given an opportunity to join an expanded premier. It's still something which can be given consideration. Promote the top 4, invite clubs to join a regionalised second tier with less stringent fudgy criteria and allow Premier clubs the option to enter a B team.

The site for us and Bohs is up next to Ikea, mentioned it a few times on here. You don't have a picture of the pic in the Star by any chance?

The first division should have merged with the A championship a few years back.

Before it ended, a number of A Championship clubs were asked to join the 1st Division but declined the offer as they didnt see it financially viable to be part of it.

Pics of Richmond in the star.

Jeff Kenna on soccer republic, possibly the worst manager we ever had. Considering he manages under 12s now or something shows how his career went.
