Something japanese. A nissan micra or daihatsu sirion or something.

What kind of mileage do you expect to cover in a year. Is the car just for you, or intended as a family car?

What size car are you looking for?

You would get a nice condition Nissan Primera (P11) for that if you're looking for something a bit bigger.

Mitsubishi Carisma 1.3 or 1.6. Bullet proof and cheap and easy to fix in the rare occurrence of needing repair. Had 2 1.6's in my day. Crashed the first, then bough a fixer upper for €200 and made 2 bad cars into one good car. Sold it only 2 weeks ago for €600 and it was perfect with 9 months test. Can't go wrong with one IMO.

a late 90's corolla is the best car for your criteria, without a shadow of a doubt.
